Dr. Coleman is renowned as a psychology educator with more than 55 years of excellence in his discipline. He initially became interested in psychology as a teenager, as he began seeking to understand what contributed to the differences between people and how to understand them. He subsequently pursued an education the University of Massachusetts, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, magna cum laude, in 1965. Completing graduate coursework at Indiana University between 1965 and 1966, Dr. Coleman concluded his academic efforts at the University of Iowa, earning a Master of Arts in psychology in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology in 1972.

Dr. Coleman began his career with a National Science Foundation predoctoral fellowship at Indiana University and the University of Iowa from 1965 to 1968, and a teaching-research fellowship at the University of Iowa from 1968 to 1971. He accepted the position of an instructor in psychology at Cleveland State University in 1971, where he later excelled as an assistant professor from 1972 to 1978, an associate professor from 1978 to 1989 and a professor of psychology since 1989. Likewise, Dr. Coleman is an active member of the International Society for the History of the Behavioral and Social Sciences.

Dr. Coleman has found further success as a frequent contributor to professional journals and an in-demand speaker in his field. Proud to have had the opportunity to interview B.F. Skinner, a seminal American psychologist, several times, he has notably served as a reviewer for several journals in relation to his areas of expertise, including Psychological Reports, Behavior and Philosophy, and American Psychologist.
