Dr. Stephens retired from teaching in 2016 as a teacher of mathematics after 30 years at Whatcom Community College in Bellingham, Washington. During her tenure at the college, she simultaneously taught math and math education courses at Western Washington University in Bellingham between 1987 and 1990. Dr. Stephens formerly taught at the University of Oregon and Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon at West High School in Iowa City, Iowa at West Junior High School in Binghamton, New York, and was a graduate assistant teaching math at the Campus School at The University of Iowa.

Deciding to pursue a career involving mathematics, Dr. Jeannette Stephens was very much inspired by both of her parents. Her father, Dr. Clarence F. Stephens, Sr. was notably the ninth African American to earn a PhD. in mathematics. He became math chairman of Morgan State College in Baltimore, MD for 15 years (1947 - 1962) , became acting math chairman at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo, NY during his 7 years there (1962 - 1669) there, was math chairman at SUNY at Potsdam NY for 18 years (1969 - 1987). He retired from Potsdam in 1987. His Potsdam - Morgan Model for excellence in teaching mathematics became nationally and internationally known and was a great inspiration to his daughter and to his wife. Dr. Jeannette Stephens' mother was also a math teacher.

Following her studies in high school, Dr. Jeannette Stephens attended SUNY at Geneseo where she received a Bachelor of Science in 1966 and a Master's of Science in 1970. She later went to the University of Iowa, where she acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics education in 1979. She is a certified teacher in New York State and Iowa. Dr. Stephens was a member of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges, the Mathematics Association of America, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been featured in the 26th and 27th edition of Who's Who of American Women.
