Now a professor emeritus of physics, Dr. Groth led a successful career in academia which spanned 46 years at the prestigious Princeton University. Beginning his teaching career in 1972 after acquiring his doctorate degree on campus, he received his tenure in 1978 and subsequently became a full professor in 1986. Since joining the faculty, Dr. Groth has taught nearly every undergraduate course in the physics department as well as several graduate courses. He served eight years as an associate chairman, continued his career on numerous university committees and, since 1987, has been a faculty adviser in the Rockefeller College. Furthermore, Dr. Groth is currently the Princeton University representative on the Universities Space Research Association.
Since 2015, Dr. Groth has consulted on behalf of Cornell Technical Services. He formerly served as a consultant for the American Cash Exchange between 2017 and 2019, TRW, and Princeton Telecommunications. Dr. Groth also served as the Hubble Space Telescope data and operations team leader for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from 1977 to 1995 and the deputy principal investigator for the Wide Field and Planetary Camera from 1990 until 1995.
Some of Dr. Groth's most profound work notably began in the mid-1970s when he began working with several colleagues on characterizing the spatial distribution of galaxies as determined by large astronomical surveys. The research continued through the late 1980s. During the late 1970s, he was selected as the data and operations team leader for what became the Hubble Space Telescope. After its launch in 1990, Dr. Groth was appointed as the deputy principal investigator for the Wide Field and Planetary Camera and became one of the core group of scientists attempting to surmount Hubble's initial difficulties.
Initially inspired to study the sciences by his father, a chemistry and physics major, Mr. Groth's father also worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. He later received a Bachelor of Science in physics at California Institute of Technology in 1968 before being accepted to Princeton University, from which he acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1971. Dr. Groth's graduate thesis was on the topic of measuring the times of arrival of pulses from a pulsar.
An elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Groth is also a member of several other industry-related organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Astronomical Society and the American Physical Society. He received an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation fellowship many years prior between 1973 and 1975. Dr. Groth was later recognized with a Medal for Exceptional Science Achievement from the NASA in 1992.
