Dr. Denton's successful career began in higher education at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Over 30 years beginning as a faculty member, he notably served in several key roles, including as the executive vice president, the board as treasurer, senior vice president, vice president of business and finance as well as the system vice president of fiscal affairs. Concurrently with a long and distinguished career in academia, Dr. Denton was active as an independent financial services professional and real estate broker and licensed as a general insurance agency in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. He and his wife Donna decided jointly that they would do what others would not do for the next five years thereafter they could do what others could not do. Therefore, they focused on their creation of Dominion Sovereign Financial Services, Alpine of South Carolina, Better Enterprises and RW Denton Company.
Dr. Denton authored several publications, including "A Study Guide for Use with Financial Accounting: A Basic Approach" in 1980, a monograph titled "The Shopping Mall on Campus: A Guide for Planning, Implementing and Administering" in 1993 and "Current Issues in College and University Human Resources" as co-author in 1993. He also contributed his expertise to multiple articles published in professional journals. Providing his wealth of knowledge to the business world, he founded the University of South Carolina Auxiliary Service Foundation. Moreover, Dr. Denton was formerly active as the chairman of the board of directors for the Better Business Bureau, Inc.
An alumnus of the University of South Carolina, Dr. Denton received a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1966, Masters in Business Administration in 1967, a Master of Accountancy in 1973 and Doctor in Education in 1980. He subsequently completed postgraduate studies at the University of Kentucky and Harvard University, Dr. Denton is a registered real estate broker-in-charge in North and South Carolina, General Insurance Agent in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia and is commissioned as a USCG master mariner and a US private instrument-rated pilot.
A member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Denton was prominent as member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers and as president of the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers. Among other memberships, he was also affiliated with the National Association of State University and Land Grant Colleges, the Southeastern Manufacturing Technology Center and the South Carolina Student Loan Corporation. Dr. Denton is also commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and commissioned as an Admiral in the Texas Navy. He received an Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor awarded by the Governor of South Carolina to those who make contributions of statewide significance.
