Having accumulated more than 60 years of experience in the field of dance, Ms. Dean has garnered a laudable reputation as the owner, director, and teacher of the Margo Dean School of Ballet in Fort Worth. She is well-known in the community for mentoring students, many of whom have gone on to pursue distinguished careers in professional ballet companies throughout the U.S. and abroad, with some even going on to secure roles on Broadway. Ms. Dean has also served as the founder/artistic director of Ballet Concerto since 1969. Ballet Concerto was the first cultural organization to go into the public schools with a lecture demonstration program in Fort Worth, TX. Ballet Concerto also offers the F.I.N.D. program (Find and Inspire New Dancers), which aspires to introduce ballet to young students who would otherwise have little opportunity to experience the joy of dance, and presents two annual ballet performances for the public including a free outdoor summer ballet concert each June.
A talented dancer, Ms. Dean made her first professional appearance in the Dallas Summer Musicals in 1947. She later was the principal dancer and choreographer of the Fort Worth Opera from 1955 to 1960, and she founded the Fort Worth Ballet Association (now the Texas Ballet Theater) in 1961. She continued to perform and to choreograph for the Fort Worth Opera in the 70's and 90's.
In the past, she has served on the board of directors of the Hip Pocket Theatre, an experimental theatre ensemble in Fort Worth, and also on the board of directors of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Likewise, she is a former member of the dance panel of the Texas Commission of the Arts. She is a past president of the Southwestern Regional Ballet Association, and is also a past member of the National Association of Regional Ballet.
Ms. Dean began taking ballet lessons at the age of three. She subsequently studied ballet in Copenhagen, New York, Rome, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco, as well as in Havana at the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. Ms. Dean has a Bachelor of Arts in dance from Ward-Belmont College, and carried out postgraduate coursework at Texas Christian University.
In recognition of her achievements in her field, Ms. Dean was the recipient of a Lifetime Commitment to Dance Award by the Dallas Dance Council in 1995. She was later named as the Outstanding Woman of the Year by the City Council of Fort Worth in 2000 and was honored as the founder of the Fort Worth Ballet (now Texas Ballet Theater) on its 40th anniversary in 2001. Additionally, she was awarded the Legacy of Women Award for Outstanding Contribution in the Arts in 2009. In 2019 she was recognized by the Arts Council of Fort Worth for her lifetime contribution to the arts. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Dean has been included in over a dozen editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of American Women.
