An internationally recognized tumor and neurological surgeon, Dr. Kalkanis possesses over two decades of experience in the field and is a recognized leader in brain and spinal cord tumors, intracranial and stereotactic neurosurgery, and adult cervical and lumbar spine disease. He contributed 7 years as chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Henry Ford, until his recent appointment as CEO of the nationally recognized 2,000-physician Henry Ford Medical Group, a major academic center for research and clinical excellence. He is also chief academic officer of the Henry Ford Health System, co-director of the Neuroscience Institute, and Medical Director of the Henry Ford Cancer Institute, which has been recognized for innovations ranging from precision medicine and advanced clinical trials to MRI-guided radiation therapy. Further, he is a member of the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center team, where he specializes in the treatment of all brain tumors, including clinical trials, intracranial neurosurgery and adult cervical and lumbar spine disease.

Dr. Kalkanis has been involved in numerous clinical trials for brain tumors over the years. His research has included clinical trials and outcome studies for brain tumor patients, targeted cell-based therapy for the treatment of malignant gliomas, viral gene therapy and stem cell delivery for novel brain cancer therapies, among other topics. Widely published on the topic of brain tumors in many prestigious medical journals as a result of his studies, Dr. Kalkanis has authored over 100 peer reviewed publications. In 2009, he notably led a multidisciplinary team of experts to publish the first and largest set of guidelines for the multidisciplinary treatment of brain metastases. He also served as the editor of the Neurosurgery Journal. Dr. Kalkanis often presents his research findings at various conferences and meetings across the country and abroad.

An alumnus of the prestigious Harvard University, Dr. Kalkanis received a Bachelor of Arts in government, magna cum laude, as a John Harvard Scholar in 1993. During 1991, he was a visiting fellow at Oxford University, where his coursework included biomedical cancer research and cell cycle control. Dr. Kalkanis later acquired a Doctor of Medicine at Harvard in 1997 where he received the Linnane Prize for highest overall achievement. Additional educational pursuits included a residency at Harvard-Massachusetts General Hospital in the department of neurosurgery for which he served as the chief resident. He is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

Named director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 2018, Dr. Kalkanis also serves as president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Other esteemed industry positions have included serving as a member and former chairman of the joint tumor section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and as the past president of the Michigan Association of Neurological Surgeons. Locally, Dr. Kalkanis is active with a patient advocacy group for tumors and brain cancer and with the Biden Cancer Initiative, a non-profit group launched by former vice president Joe Biden.

Dr. Kalkanis has secured multiple grants from the American Brain Tumor Association, Henry Ford and other organizations. He also received the national First Place Research Award from the American College of Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Named One of Michigan's Top Doctors by Hour Magazine every year between 2008 and 2019, Dr. Kalkanis is also a celebrated Marquis listee who has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the Midwest.
