ROCKVILLE, MA, February 07, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- (Joseph) Thomas Hickman has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After accruing more than 36 years of practiced experience in educational administration, Mr. Hickman a fifth-generation citizen of the Washington D.C. area retired from his exemplary work as a middle school principal in Montgomery County, MD. During this time, he also worked as the chairman of the board of the Montgomery County Teachers Federal Credit Union. Although he had the opportunity to become a high school principal, Mr. Hickman believed that the middle schools in his area were more in need of his services.

In pursuit of his career in education, Mr. Hickman earned a bachelor's degree from Wittenberg University. He subsequently obtained a master's degree from the George Washington University, where he would later teach as an adjunct professor of education upon his retirement. During his spare time, Mr. Hickman contributes to his field as the chair of the insurance and health committee of the Montgomery County Retired Educators Association, a post he has held since 2001. He also has been quite active in community activities such as Boys Scouts of America, president of his church council, chairing a state committee on the Maryland Retired School Personnel Association

One of the proudest moments of Mr. Hickman's career was establishing a program for children with behavioral problems who had been written off by the system. Every year all students in this program achieved both academic successes coupled with behavioral excellence. Toward the end of his career, he found success with a school that had a low reputation, but with his assistance and expertise, he was able to bolster the institution to the point where they received the U.S. Government Excellence in Education Award. Notably, Mr. Hickman was one of only six administrators in Montgomery County that received a cash reward for outstanding service to the school system. He developed for the county's school system the very first outdoor education program for junior high school students.

In recognition of his body of work, Mr. Hickman was presented with a Certificate of Recognition and Appreciation for the Excellence due to his exceptional activities as the chair of the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services' Child Support Work Group, this committee is mandated by the state. In addition, he was honored for excellence in leadership through Montgomery County Council and the Maryland Senate. Looking toward the future, Mr. Hickman aims to continue reaching out to those in need.

Currently, he serves on the advisory board for fraternity students at Gettysburg College. The following illustrate additional successful contributions to the community: during his college years, he was elected president of the student government to later become Chief Justice of the Student Court, also during college years, he guided his fraternity to receive the highest grade point average, and as a layperson, he served as interim pastor to a sizeable congregation.
