Beverly B. West, PhD, RN, CPN Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An accomplished educator, Dr. Beverly B. West has taught courses in child health nursing as an assistant professor on behalf of the University of Memphis for more than a decade.

An accomplished educator, Dr. West has taught courses in child health nursing as an assistant professor on behalf of the University of Memphis for more than a decade. She formerly contributed for several years as a clinical assistant and clinical associate professor on campus. In addition to her responsibilities in the classroom, Dr. West is a member of the student affairs committee at the university's Loewenberg College of Nursing, and is a former faculty counselor for Sigma Theta Tau National Nurses Honor Society. Additionally, she works part-time on weekends as a nurse for Maxim Healthcare's Services in Memphis.

Dr. West began her professional journey in 1976 as a staff nurse at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. She subsequently became a branch manager for Home-Bound Medical Care in Somerville, and was later a staff nurse for the University of Tennessee Clinical Research Center in Memphis. For much of her career between 1988 and 2006, Dr. West found success as a diabetes program coordinator for LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis.

As a leader in the healthcare field, Dr. West has contributed numerous articles to scientific journals in her area of expertise, in which she has covered topics on children and diabetes management, diabetes in the school system and other areas of concern. She has also enjoyed the opportunity to speak before the Society of Pediatric Nurses regarding her specialty, which she found immensely gratifying. Furthermore, she is the founder of the Diabetes Parent Support Group. Located in Memphis, the group was established in 1989. In her community-driven endeavors, Dr. West has been active with several organizations, such as the FIMR case review team for the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department in Tennessee. She also recently served on the Adverse Childhood Experiences Action Team for the Urban Child Institute at Loewenberg College of Nursing, between 2017 and 2019.

An alumnus of Memphis State University, Dr. West received an Associate of Arts in 1976 and a Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1985. She later acquired a Master of Science in nursing at the University of Memphis in 2006 and a Doctor of Philosophy from Capella University in 2017. Dr. West is a registered nurse in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi, is a Certified Pediatric Nurse through the Pediatric Nurse Certification Board and holds a diabetes education certification and pediatric nursing certification.

Dr. West is a member of the Tennessee Nurses Association, where she was notably the recipient of an Excellence in Nursing Award in 1991. She is also a member of the Society of Pediatric Nurses, the National League for Nursing, the Mid-South Chapter of Pediatric Nurses, Memphis Diabetes Association and Sigma Theta Tau National Nurses Honor Society. In 2005, Dr. West received a Diabetes Educator Award from the American Diabetes Association. She was later named to the Capella University President's List every year from 2012 to 2017 and received a Top Nurse in Memphis Award from the International Nurses Association in 2017.
