Having accrued over 45 years of inimitable experience in the field of chemistry, Dr. Jao has most recently excelled as a consultant after his retirement from Afton Chemical Corporation where he served as a research and development scientist and advanced to the highest technical rank of R&D Fellow between 1995 and 2010. He previously worked as a fundamental research chemist at Texaco Research Center from 1981 to 1995. In addition to his career in the private sector, he found success in academia. Dr. Jao initially began in the field as a chemistry professor at the University of Puerto Rico from 1974 until 1980. He was invited to serve as a visiting associate professor at Texas A&M University for a year in 1980.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Jao earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in physical chemistry from the University of Florida in 1973. He proceeded to complete a postdoctoral fellowship at Royal Holloway College, University of London. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Jao authored and co-authored a total of over 100 peer-reviewed technical papers, attained over 35 U.S. and foreign patents, and contributed three chapters to books in his area of expertise.
To remain well-versed in the intricacies of his field, Dr. Jao has maintained his membership with a number of pertinent organizations, including the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE), and the American Chemical Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS). A donor to various charitable organizations, he has been presented with numerous accolades in recognition of his immense talent in the field. Moreover, Dr. Jao received a Research Award from ACS's Mid-Hudson Section in 1988, a Texaco Annual Creativity Award in 1988, a TLT (a prestigious STLE magazine) Editor's Choice of Paper recognition in 2008, two SAE awards - an Award for Research on Automotive Lubricants in 2009 and a Forest R. McFarland Award in 2010, an Outstanding Industrial Innovator Award from ACS's Virginia Section in 2010, and a Captain Alfred E. Hunt Award from STLE in 2011. Last but not the least, Dr. Jao has been recognized as being one of the first scientists to determine the hardness of diesel soot particles to advance fundamental lubrication science.
Raised in a village in Taiwan, Dr. Jao was drawn to his areas of interest by enrolling at the University of Puerto Rico, where he performed well in the field of chemistry. In the decades since, he has been proud to contribute towards solving major technical issues in the field and developing technological concepts into commercial products. Dr. Jao attributes much of his success to the influence of his father, Wei-De Jao, who encouraged him to reach for his goals and triumph against the odds.
