Dr. Maria Aguirre Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Medicine

    REDLANDS, CA, February 18, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Maria Aguirre has been included in Marquis Who's Who. With nearly 45 years of experience to her credit, Maria G. Aguirre, MD, FAAP, has been designated as a pediatrician emerita at the Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center since 2014 while excelling on the staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Ontario, California, and the staff of the Family Care Center at the Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center. Prior to these appointments, she worked as a pediatrician at the Redlands Family Clinic from 2009 to 2013. Between 1989 and 2008, she further flourished with Kaiser Permanente in a number of posts, including as a physician-in-charge for Coachella Valley, the regional chief of pediatrics, a chief of pediatrics and a staff pediatrician. Moreover, Dr. Aguirre provided her wealth of knowledge to the voluntary clinical staff for the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California from 1990 to 2005.

Previously, Dr. Aguirre served as a staff pediatrician at the San Bernardino County Medical Center and an assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of California Irvine from 1986 to 1989. She was additionally active at the Bay Hospital and Medical Center as a chief of pediatrics from 1984 to 1985 and the University of California San Diego as a clinical instructor of community medicine from 1980 to 1985. During this time, she operated out of a private practice in San Diego from 1979 to 1985. Dr. Aguirre began her career as a pediatric resident at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center from 1976 to 1977 and the Moffitt Hospital with the University of California San Francisco from 1977 to 1979.

Furthermore, Dr. Aguirre remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She had formerly maintained her involvement with the San Diego Pediatric Society, the San Diego Woman Physicians and the Hinterland Pediatric Society. She was also associated with the Flying Samaritans, the American Board of Pediatrics and LIGA. Dr. Aguirre was a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, for which she held a role as a member of the Fetus and Newborn Committee and as the coordinator of the Pediatric Bi-national Conference for the San Diego chapter.

Beyond her primary responsibilities within the field, Dr. Aguirre has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. A clinical sub-investigator in Kaiser Permanente's vaccine study at the University of California Los Angeles from 1999 to 2002, she contributed to the aforementioned company's executive committee as a member since 1993 and a president from 1997 to 1998. Between 2002 and 2006, she held positions of a number of committees, including the balloting committee, the regional immunization practice committee, the institutional review board and the credential and privileges committee, for which she was appointed as the chairman. Dr. Aguirre has found much success with the San Bernardino County Medical Center as a member of the quality assurance committee from 1988 to 1989 and the infectious disease control committee from 1987 to 1989.

Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Aguirre pursued an education at the University of the Incarnate Word, earning a Bachelor of Science in nursing and biology in 1972. She continued her academic efforts with a Master of Science in health and medical sciences at the University of California Berkeley in 1974. She concluded her studies at the University of California San Francisco in 1976, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine. In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Aguirre became board certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Aguirre has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. She was notably recognized as a Top Doctor in Coachella Valley in 2007 and 2008 and a Top Doctor by the U.S. News and World Report between 2009 and 2012. Likewise, Dr. Aguirre was presented with a number of honors from Kaiser Permanente, including the Chief of the Year Award in 1995, and the Exceptional Contribution Award in 2000.

Attributing her success to her curiosity and her natural, unwavering desire to figure things out, Dr. Aguirre was initially drawn to the field of medicine after facing adversity while studying biology as an undergraduate. While working as a nurse in a hospital, she prospered in a doctoral program at the University of California Berkeley, allowing her to shift her focus to becoming a doctor. Mentored by an internal medicine physician in San Francisco who helped her discover how fulfilling her work could be, she advises all up-and-coming medical professionals to be happy with their work, as those who entered the field for the wrong reasons can make life miserable for their patients and colleagues as well. Looking toward the future, Dr. Aguirre hopes to continue thriving in her current medical practices.
