Having accumulated more than 15 years of experience as an educator in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Kessler has most recently garnered a lauded reputation as a member of the staff of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, where he has distinguished himself as an associate professor, the chief of the division of hand and elbow surgery and a residency program director in the department of orthopedic surgery since 2011. He is additionally active as a lecturer of Gross Anatomy and a facilitator for the Medical Education Journal Club. Previously holding the position of an academic and administrative chief resident of the Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC) for Northwell Health between 2009 and 2010, Dr. Kessler initially began his career as a research assistant at the International Center for Health Outcomes and Innovation Research at Columbia University from 2003 to 2004. He served as an intern at the department of general surgery for LIJMC from 2005 to 2006 and as a resident within the department of orthopedic surgery from 2006 to 2010. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Kessler completed a fellowship in the department of hand surgery at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital at the Philadelphia Hand Center from 2010 until 2011.

Reviewing the Yearbook of Hand and Upper Limb Surgery in 2016 and 2015, he worked as an editor for "Blueprints Orthopedics: A Pocket Guide" in 2005. In his civic endeavors, he has volunteered as a hand surgeon for the Chinle Comprehensive Care Facility in Chinle, AZ. Likewise, he excels as the co-chair of the Native American health service committee for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and as a question writer for the self-assessment committee for the same organization. In 2003, Dr. Kessler notably undertook a medical mission to the African countries of Uganda and Kenya.

Before embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Kessler pursued a formal education at the CUNY School of Medicine's Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Science in biomedical science in 2002. He continued his studies at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, earning a Master of Public Health in 2004. Dr. Kessler concluded his academic efforts in 2005, having graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from Albany Medical College. Certified as a hand surgeon and a medical education researcher, Dr. Kessler has been licensed to practice medicine by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, as well as by the District of Columbia and the state of Maryland.

To remain aware of developments within his field, Dr. Kessler has maintained his professional affiliation with various organizations of note, including the Georgetown University Medical Center Teaching Academy, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, the Washington D.C. Society for Surgery of the Hand, the Medical Society of the District of Columbia and the American Orthopedic Association, for which he has participated on the council of residency directors. Well-regarded for his myriad accomplishments, he was recognized by Washingtonian Magazine as a Top Doctor between 2015 and 2019. He was additionally presented with a Kenmore Award for Excellence in Resident Education from MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in 2017, a Joseph H. Boyes Award from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in 2009 and an Award for Excellence in Orthopedic Research from LIJMC in 2009. Moreover, Dr. Kessler has been listed in various Top Ten Lists among patient surveyed.
