Peggy R. Henry-Watkins Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Education

Peggy R. Henry-Watkins served as a textbook reviewer for AMSCO and McGraw-Hill, and as a contributing writer for various science manuals.

    CHARLOTTE, NC, February 27, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Peggy R. Henry-Watkins has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Inspired by her family's history in the field of education, Ms. Henry-Watkins excelled as a biology teacher at Western High School in 1968. In 1970, she transferred to Sedgefield Junior High School, where she remained for 19 years as a teacher and the eventual chairperson of the science department. During this time, Ms. Henry-Watkins also worked as a science teacher in the Staff Development Center Time Release Program at Discovery Place and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and as an adult education evening instructor for Central Community College in 1972 and 1973. Additionally, she was a CMS instructor and facilitator for science and technology workshops as well as a CMS instructor for new science teachers' workshops.

Before retiring in 2007, Ms. Henry-Watkins gained valuable expertise in the field as a biology teacher and a science department chairperson for Providence High School. Although her career has been suffused with highlights, she is especially proud to have developed a hands-on, self-paced audio tutorial lab-oriented package for Project Exceptional Children Science Education Program through the National Science Foundation during the late-1970s. A dedicated civic servant, Ms. Henry-Watkins routinely contributes as a volunteer through Discovery Place, as well as the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

Prior to obtaining her first position in education, Ms. Henry-Watkins earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Bennett College. She subsequently received a Master of Science in biology education from North Carolina A&T State University in 1972 and a certificate through the University of Virginia in 2004. She also holds a mentoring certification through the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. In order to remain aware of developments in the field, Ms. Henry-Watkins has maintained her professional alignment with the North Carolina Science Teachers Association, the North Carolina Academically Gifted Teachers Association, and the Providence High School Scholarship Committee.

With a plethora of knowledge at her disposal, Ms. Henry-Watkins served as a textbook reviewer for AMSCO and McGraw-Hill, and as a contributing writer for various science manuals and the Modern Red School House Project at Hudson Institute. Ms. Henry-Watkins also served as science advisor for the North Carolina Student Academy of Science, and North Carolina Odyssey of the Mind, and as an advisor to the Providence High School National Honor Society. In light of her outstanding accomplishments, she was named as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Teacher of the Year in 1980 and earned the North Carolina Outstanding Math and Science Teacher of the Year in 1983. Additionally, Ms. Henry-Watkins received the North Carolina Academically Gifted Teacher of the Year Award in 1989 and was listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 2007. In the near future, Ms. Henry-Watkins aims to enjoy her retirement.
