Having accrued more than four decades of expertise in the field of vascular imaging and vascular/endovascular surgery, Dr. AbuRahma has garnered a laudable reputation as a professor of surgery at West Virginia University. He attended Alexandria University in Alexandria, Egypt, completing a pre-medicine degree in 1965, and earned a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1970, graduating summa cum laude. Dr. AbuRahma is proud to have been the first honors graduate of the Alexandria University Medical School. He credits his mentor, a vascular surgeon, with instilling in him a desire to continue his surgical training in the United States.

Dr. AbuRahma undertook an internship at the Alexandria University Hospitals in Alexandria, Egypt, between 1970 and 1971. Following this accomplishment, he became a house officer at Dhahran Health Center at the American Hospital of the Arab American Oil Company, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, from 1971 until 1973, when he relocated to the United States. Dr. AbuRahma completed a residency in surgery at the State University of New York at Syracuse and West Virginia University/Charleston from 1973 to 1977, and a fellowship in vascular surgery at the Arizona Heart Institute, Phoenix, between 1977 and 1978.

Dr. AbuRahma joined the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center in Charleston in 1978 as a instructor of surgery, rising to assistant professor of surgery in 1979, and associate professor of surgery in 1982. He served as a professor of surgery at West Virginia University from 1986 until now, and a surgical grand rounds coordinator for the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center between 1989 and 2008. Since 1991, Dr. AbuRahma has found success as the chief of vascular surgery, the director of the vascular surgery fellowship program and integrated vascular residency program, and the director of surgical research for the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center/Charleston. He has been a Distinguished Fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery since 1991. Dr. AbuRahma served as President of the Eastern Vascular Society, President of the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery and Vice President of the Society for Vascular Surgery, and will start his term as President-Elect in June 2020.

Dr. AbuRahma has been serving on the editorial board of several professional publications including the Journal of Vascular Surgery, Vascular, and the Annals of Vascular Surgery. Well-regarded in his field, he has been published extensively, with research focusing on noninvasive vascular imaging techniques. Among many other accolades, Dr. AbuRahma was bestowed with such recognitions as the 2020 American Heart Association Heart of Gold Award and more important, the Benedum Distinguished Scholar Award in Biosciences and Health Sciences of West Virginia University/Charleston in 1999-2000.
