Having accrued more than 55 years of distinction within his chosen field, Dr. Scudder was granted professor emeritus status in 2000 as an anthropologist and educator on behalf of the California Institute of Technology. A graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, he continued his education at Harvard University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1952, and completed further postgraduate coursework at Yale University between 1953 and 1954. Following his return to Harvard, he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in 1960. In 1961, Dr. Scudder pursued additional postgraduate coursework at the London School of Economics.
From 1956 to 1963, Dr. Scudder rose from the position of a research officer to a senior research officer at the Rhodes-Livingstone Institute in Northern Rhodesia. He subsequently affiliated as an assistant professor at the American University in Cairo between 1961 and 1962, and a research fellow at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University from 1963 until 1964. Dr. Scudder joined the faculty of the California Institute of Technology in 1964 as an assistant professor, rising to become an associate professor in 1966 and a professor of anthropology in 1969. He was further bestowed with the distinguished title of a professor emeritus in 2000.
Dr. Scudder maintained activity as one of three directors of the Institute for Development Anthropology from 1976 to 2002. He further served as a commissioner of the World Commission on Dams between 1998 and 2000, and has consulted for the United Nations Development Program, the World Health Organization, the World Bank and the USA Agency for International Development. What's more, he is the author of numerous works on social anthropology and ecology, with a particular focus on the regional impact of large dams in developing areas, including "The Ecology of the Gwembe Tonga," released in 1962, and "A Retrospective Analysis of Lao's Nam Theun Dam," published in the International Journal of Water Resources Development. Among other honors, Dr. Scudder is the recipient of the 1998 Lucy Mair Medal for Applied Anthropology and the 1984 Solomon T. Kimball Award for Applied Anthropology.
Since 1953 his career has been dominated by three quite different research situations. The first began in 1953 when Elizabeth Colson asked him to joint her in studying the impacts of forced relocation on 57,000 Gwembe Tonga, and on their environment, due to construction of the Kariba dam on the Zambezi River. That study continues today as the longest and most detailed study of dam-induced involuntary resettlement. The second research situation included the resettlement and environmental analysis of dams on the Nile in Egypt, the Okavango, India's Narmada River, and a tributary of the Mekong in Laos. His third research focus involved the issues dealt with in his 2010 "Global Threats, Global Issues. Living with Declining Living Standards."
