Having accrued well over 50 years of expertise in his field, Dr. Lick has distinguished himself as a skilled mathematics professor and higher education administrator. Enjoying a natural propensity for mathematics, he attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science with honors, and completed a Master of Science in mathematics in 1959. Dr. Lick concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in math at the University of California Riverside in 1965.

From 1958 until 1959, Dr. Lick served as a teaching and research assistant at Michigan State University. He found success as an instructor and the chairman of the department of mathematics at Port Huron Junior College between 1959 and 1960, and an instructor at the University of Redlands from 1961 to 1963. He subsequently contributed during the 1964 and 1965 academic year as a mathematics teaching assistant at the University of California, departing to join the faculty at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Lick completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Brookhaven National Laboratory from 1967 until 1968, and returned to the University of Tennessee as an associate professor until 1969. While at UT, Dr. Lick also served as a scientific consultant to the US Atomic Energy Commission in Oak Ridge, TN.

Dr. Lick became an associate professor and distinguished himself as the head of the mathematics department at Drexel University between 1969 and 1972, and as the vice president of academic affairs at Russell Sage College from 1972 to 1974. He then became dean of sciences and health professions at Old Dominion University from 1974 until 1978, and was president at Georgia Southern College between 1978 and 1986. Dr. Lick continued his career as the president of the University of Maine from 1986 to 1991, where he also led the creation of the American University in Bulgaria through the University of Maine. He was president of Florida State University from 1991 until 1994, and remained there as a distinguished University Professor until 2008, when he was granted emeritus status.

As of 2006, Dr. Lick has excelled as the chairman of the board of the technology company Hylighter LLC, and has been a member on the board of trustees at Graceland University since 2016. He is included in over 50 national and international biography listings and published over 100 research articles, 285 newspaper columns and eight books, including "Schools Can Change: A Step-by-Step Change Creation System for Building Innovative Schools and Increasing Learning," published in 2013.

Among other accolades, Dr. Lick was the recipient of the 2010 International Peace Prize from the United Cultural Convention, honored by MSU with the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award, given the One of 40 Alumni Who Make a Difference Award by URC and in 2016 recognized by the non-alumni emeritus award, the Distinguished Service Award at FSU.
