A celebrated dermatologist of nearly 50 years, Dr. Heaton has been aligned with the University of Cincinnati (UC) since 1978. He is now a professor emeritus of the University of Cincinnati, where he excelled for nearly 30 years. Hired as an associate professor of dermatology in 1978, he later became a full professor and contributed for one year as an interim director for the department of dermatology during 1998. Prior to this, Dr. Heaton worked at the University of Pennsylvania in the School of Medicine as a member of the department of dermatology. Additionally, he became a senior attending physician and chief of dermatology at Philadelphia General Hospital in the mid-1970s.
Between 1965 and 1967, Dr. Heaton was in the U.S. Public Health Service where he served with the rank of a lieutenant commander.
After acquiring a Bachelor of Science at Texas A&M University in 1957, Dr. Heaton earned a Doctor of Medicine at Baylor University College of Medicine in 1961. He proceeded to complete an internship at Jefferson David Hospital in Houston, followed by a residency at Baylor University College of Medicine in dermatology. Dr. Heaton was later the recipient of an honorary Master of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology.
Dr. Heaton is an elected fellow of the American College of Physicians, an honorary life member of the American Academy of Dermatology, and a member of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He is or has been a member of several other medical organizations, including the American Medical Association, the Society of Investigative Dermatology, the American Venereal Disease Association, the American Dermatological Association and the Cincinnati Dermatological Society. Furthermore, Dr. Heaton has authored more than 35 articles to several scientific journals and 12 chapters to various books. He also authored "Audiovisual Course in Venereal Disease" in 1972. With D.M. Pillsbury, MD he co-authored "Manual of Dermatology" in 1980.
In 2010, Dr. Heaton received a Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio Dermatological Association, and was named Ohio Dermatologist of the Year for 2000.
