Dr. Theodore I. Malinin was bestowed with a George Hyatt Award from the American Association of Tissue Banks.

Now an emeritus professor of orthopedics, Dr. Malinin was aligned with the University of Miami in Florida for much of his career. Hired as a professor of surgery in 1970, he subsequently taught as a professor of orthopedics until his retirement. Additionally, Dr. Malinin held a teaching appointment at Georgetown University in Washington between 1964 and 1970, and found success as a surgeon for the U.S. Public Health Service from 1962 until 1964.

Best known for his research in the area of tissue banking, bone and tissue transplantation, latent injury in cryopreservation of cartilage and cartilage structure, Dr. Malinin notably holds 28 patents in the area of tissue banking. During his career, he has successfully completed many large bone transplantations on patients to avoid amputations. Most impressively, however, he was responsible for the establishment of a tissue bank on the University of Miami campus. Founded in 1970, the University of Miami Tissue Bank (UMTB) is the oldest academic institution of its kind in the U.S. UMTB was established in order to provide safe and effective bone and soft tissue grafts to patients long before allograft bone transplantations were widely accepted.

Published extensively, Dr. Malinin authored his first book, "Surgery and Life" in 1978. He later released "Cancer Merchants" in 2008 and edited three other books. Dr. Malinin has served as a contributor of over 200 articles to various scholarly journals as well.

An alumnus of Concord College, Dr. Malinin received a Bachelor of Science in 1955. He later acquired a Master of Science and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Virginia in 1958 and 1960, respectively, as well as fellowships at the University of Virginia and the University of Cambridge. Additionally, Dr. Malinin received an honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Scranton in 1990.

Among his industry-related memberships, Dr. Malinin is active with the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Orthopedic Research Society, the Southern Medical Association and the Cell Transplantation Society, among others. He is also a member of his local rotary, for which he was named as a Distinguished Rotarian in 1994. Since 1964, Dr. Malinin has also been involved as a member of the National Representative Committee in Washington. Further, he has provided his time to the community as a vice-president of the Mannheimer Foundation.

In light of his myriad contributions to the field, Dr. Malinin has been recognized with several accolades throughout his career. To wit, he was bestowed with a George Hyatt Award from the American Association of Tissue Banks. Dr. Malinin is also a celebrated Marquis listee who has been showcased in close to 30 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
