In collaboration with his associate, Ron Graves, Dave Yarbrough established R&D Services, Inc. in 1994 after many years of service on the faculty in the College of Engineering at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, TN (TTU) and many years of employment at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN. R&D Services was accredited for testing in the field of thermal insulation by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program administered by the National Institute of Science and Technology in 1997 and later by the International Accreditation Service for insulation testing and Inspection services. R&D Services located in Watertown, TN. R&D Services, Inc. and a parallel organization R&D Engineering, LLC provide testing, consulting, and quality control activities in many areas related to building materials especially thermal insulation and building science. Dr. Yarbrough is a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with degrees BChE, MS (ChE), and PhD (ChE) awarded in 1960, 1961, and 1966, respectively. At the present time he is a registered professional engineer in the states of Tennessee and Florida.

During the period 1968 to 2002, Dr. Yarbrough was a member of the faculty of chemical engineering in the College of Engineering and the Graduate Faculty of the University. He served as Chair of the Chemical Engineering Department from 1987 to 2002 and Associate Dean of Engineering for Graduate Studies and Research from 1976-1979. Upon retirement he was awarded the title Professor Emeritus. While at TTU, he received a University Sigma Xi Research Award in 1983, the University Research Award in 1987 and an outstanding Engineering Faculty Award in 1990. Committee C16 of the ASTM has awarded Yarbrough its Honors Award and the McElroy award. ASTM has awarded Yarbrough its Award of Merit (Fellow). Yarbrough was identified as a Distinguished University Scientist by the Tennessee Academy of Science in 1998, received a R&D 100 award with J. Kosny, Mark Leuthhold, and Tim Riazzi in 2009, and the International Thermal Conductivity Award in 1995. The National Institute of Building Sciences gave awards of appreciation to Yarbrough in 2012, 2014, and 2018 for work as Technical Program Co-Chair for the Conferences BEST 3, 4, and 5,. He is a member of Sigma Xi (research), Phi Kappa Phi (Scholastic), Pi Mu Epsilon (Mathematics), Tau Beta Pi (Engineering).

Among other accomplishments he is a celebrated Marquis Listee who has been included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
