Dr. Templeton is renowned as a biologist and conservationist with more than 40 years of contribution to his field. Inspired by his father, a former coal miner and self-taught engineer, he initially pursued an education at Washington University in Saint Louis, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1969. He concluded his studies at the University of Michigan, from which he obtained both a Master of Science in statistics and a Doctor of Philosophy in genetics in 1972.

From 1972 to 1974, Dr. Templeton began his career as a junior fellow with the Michigan Society of Fellows in Ann Arbor. He further flourished as an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin from 1974 to 1977. He subsequently found much success with Washington University in Saint Louis in a number of positions, including as an associate professor from 1977 to 1981 and a professor from 1981 to 2001. Dr. Templeton was subsequently designated as the aforementioned university's Charles Rebstock professor of biology in 2001 before accruing emeritus status in 2013.

Dr. Templeton has also excelled as a professor at the Institute of Evolution in Haifa, Israel from 2007 to 2016. A founding member of the Society for Conservation Biology, he has notably consulted for the Saint Louis Zoological Park. Having accepted grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, he was recognized as a fellow of the Academy of Science of Saint Louis, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Moreover, Dr. Templeton has served on the editorial boards of publications including Animal Conservation, the American Naturalist and Molecular Phylogenetics & Evolution.
