Dr. Marvin W. Daehler has distinguished himself as a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Massachusetts.

Having accrued more than 40 years of inimitable experience in the field of child development, Dr. Daehler has distinguished himself as a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Massachusetts. He attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, graduating in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts, and subsequently earned a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Minnesota in 1968. Dr. Daehler initially intended to pursue a career in chemistry, but quickly realized his passion upon undertaking undergraduate psychology coursework.

In 1968, Dr. Daehler began his career with the University of Massachusetts as an assistant professor. He rose to the position of an associate professor in 1974, and advanced from there to become a professor between 1983 and 2009. During those years he served in various administrative positions in the department including Director of Undergraduate Studies, Graduate Program Director, and Associate Chair. In light of his exemplary career accomplishments, Dr. Daehler was granted professor emeritus status in 2009.

Dr. Daehler's research focuses on memory and problem-solving in young children. He pioneered research strategies for use in pre-verbal children, and developed a large body of work on analogical problem-solving skills and early representational capacities in young children. He is the co-author of "Cognitive Development," published in 1985, and "Child Development: A Thematic Approach," first published in 1992 and continuing through a 6th edition released in 2012. He has been a frequent contributor to professional journals and served as an Associate Editor for the Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development from 1997 to 1999 and Associate Editor for the journal of Child Development from 2002 to 2007. Dr. Daehler is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and a member of the Society for Research in Child Development and the Association for Psychological Science.
