Previously, he worked as the senior managing director of C.G. E&C Co. and the director of Dong-Il E&C Co. during the 1990s and early 2000s. Dr. Chai began his career as the manager of civil engineering for Dae-Lim Engineering Co.
Throughout his career, Dr. Chai has also gained valuable expertise as a design advisor for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Expressway Corporation, a design VE advisor for the Korean Land and Housing Corporation and an adjunct professor with Chung-Ang University's Graduate School of Civil Engineering and the Korea Contractor Financial Cooperative. Notably, he was honored to help develop the separated doughnut augered (SDA) piles construction method, which is used to build 95% of the total foundation piles for civil structures and buildings in Korea. Furthermore, Dr. Chai proudly assisted in the development of bearing capacity design method and construction consulting techniques for SDA piles, thereby reducing the foundation construction cost by around 15% and shortening the construction period.
Before embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Chai earned a bachelor degree in civil engineering from Chung-Ang University in 1983. Subsequently, he obtained a master's degree in geotechnical engineering and a doctorate in civil engineering from his alma mater in 2002 and 2007, respectively. A certified professional engineer, Dr. Chai retains his professional alignment with the Korean Geotechnical Society, the Korean Society of Civil Engineers, the Korean and International Societies for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, the Architectural Institute of Korea, the Korean Geo-Environmental Society and the Korean Professional Engineers Association.
With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Chai has held 30 patents, including a method of calculating the bearing capacity of augered pile and a permanent drainage device for building. He has also authored a number of papers, such as "New Construction Method of SDA Piles," and "Skin Friction Capacity of Separated Doughnut Auger (SDA) Pile" for The Proceedings of the 13th International Offshore and Polar Engineering Conference. Dr. Chai additionally penned "Estimation of End Bearing Capacity of SDA (Separated Doughnut Augered) Piles on Various Bearing Stratums," which was featured in the Journal of the Korean Geotechnical Society, and the engineering books "Standard Design and Construction Techniques of Large Diameter PHC Piles", pp.1-265, and "Standard Design and Construction Practice of PHC Pile Foundation" pp.1-577.
For his outstanding professional work, Dr. Chai has been presented with Minister's Awards from the Ministry of Culture and Education in 1977, the Ministry of National Defense in 1978 and the Ministry of Construction and Transportation in 2007. Dedicated to his community, he contributes to those in need through ChildFund Korea and Medecins Sans Frontieres.
