Bishop Mutti is renowned as a retired United Methodist minister with more than 50 years of service to his faith, church and congregations. Called to ministry while enrolled in college, he pursued an education at Central Methodist College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1960. He subsequently obtained a Master of Divinity at the Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in 1963 and a Doctor of Ministry at the Saint Paul School of Theology in 1975. Bishop Mutti received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Baker University in 1993 and one from Central Methodist University in 2000.

While in school, Bishop Mutti served congregations at Clark, Renick, and New Hope in Missouri and in Leroy, Indiana. He furthered his career as the pastor of the Union Star Charge in Missouri, serving there from 1963 to 1965. He worked as the senior pastor of the Savannah Methodist Church from 1965 to 1974, creating the Crossroads Parish before leaving that position.

Bishop Mutti was appointed as the Associate Council Director of the UMC Missouri West Conference in 1974, rising to the post of the council director from 1980 to 1982. He served as the senior pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Blue Springs, MO from 1982 to 1987, then was appointed as District Superintendent in the Missouri Conference from 1987 to 1992.

Bishop Mutti was elected into the United Methodist Council of Bishops in 1992 and was assigned to service in the Kansas Area from 1992-2004. From 2004 to 2009 he served as the Bishop-in-Residence at Saint Paul School of Theology, teaching a variety of classes, including United Methodist history and polity and ecumenical theology. He is the author of several books, including "Faithful Members: Doctrine and Duties of the Christian Faith," "Breath of New Life," and "Dancing in a Wheelchair", which was co-authored with his wife, Etta Mae. Since 2004, Bishop Mutti helped to establish the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund. He served as coordinator for four years and has continued as a member of the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund Committee until now. He has remained an advocate for HIV and AIDS awareness, treatment, and research, as well as for the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in the United Methodist Church and national policy.
