Dr. Runnells celebrates a career in education and geochemistry that has spanned three incredible decades. Recruited by the University of Colorado in 1969 after teaching at the University of California Santa Barbara, he served as the chairman of the Department of Geological Sciences for the final three years of his tenure at the University of Colorado. He found further success for nearly 25 years teaching various courses within the aforementioned department. He was equally active in the field as a private consultant in geochemistry, working for various private companies and government agencies. Dr. Runnells has worked in environmental consulting in Fort Collins since 1993.

A respected figure in his field, Dr. Runnells was a member of the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, an independent federal agency in the executive branch of the U.S. Federal Government whose purpose is to perform independent technical and scientific peer review of the U.S. Department of Energy's activities related to managing and disposing of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. He was appointed to the Board by President Bill Clinton. He also flourished for several years as a member of the Water, Science and Technology Board for the National Resource Council/National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Runnells has also volunteered his time with various charities.

A prolific author, Dr. Runnells has contributed to approximately 90 articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He was also active as an editorial board member for several technical journals and a reviewer of research proposals for the National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Energy. Passionate about his community, Dr. Runnells has been a speaker on various topics before civic and historic groups.

Dr. Runnells initially earned a bachelor's degree, with high honors, at the University of Utah in 1958. He concluded his studies at the prestigious Harvard University, from which he obtained a master's degree in 1960 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1964, respectively. An elected fellow of the Geological Society America, Dr. Runnells has also been affiliated with several other industry-related organizations, including the Geochemical Society and the Association of Ground Water Scientists and Engineers.

Most notably, Dr. Runnells is a member and a past president of the Association of Exploration Geochemistry. Additionally, he was recognized as a National Science Foundation fellow between 1958 and 1963. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Runnells has been included in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
