NEW YORK, NY, March 25, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Stephen Cannon Schlesinger with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Schlesinger celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After completing law school, Mr. Schlesinger started his career as a legal assistant to the president of the New York State Urban Development Corporation in 1968. He subsequently transitioned into a new field, developing himself as a writer so that he could create an impact on the country in terms of domestic social reform, and to promote the idea of multi-lateral engagement around the world. Founding 'The New Democrat' in 1969, a monthly magazine dedicated to uniting the left and radical wings and replacing the inert leadership in the Democratic Party, Mr. Schlesinger maintained his publication for three years.

Over the course of the next decade, Mr. Schlesinger's noteworthy roles included serving as a speechwriter for the Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern, a columnist for the Boston Globe, a staff writer for TIME magazine, and an editorial writer and chief political correspondent for the New York Post. In the next ten years, he worked for Governor Mario Cuomo of New York State as a speech writer and foreign policy advisor and the director for international organizations for the state's Department of Economic Development. In the following decade, he served on the United Nations Habitat Agency as special assistant to the director. He later became the director of the World Policy Institute at the New School University between 1997 and 2006. Today, Mr. Schlesinger remains a fellow at the Century Foundation in New York City since 2008.

As an American author, political commentator and international affairs specialist, Mr. Schlesinger has gained extensive recognition for his expertise. He has spoken at the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's lecture series, was a lecturer for the Royce Carlton Agency, and an adjunct professor in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and at the New School University. Additionally, Mr. Schlesinger was an active member of the international election observer teams for the National Democratic Institute and was involved with the Al Gore and John Kerry presidential campaigns.

Mr. Schlesinger has written several of his own books. In 1982, he co-authored "Bitter Fruit: The Untold Story of the U.S. Coup in Guatemala." He also wrote "Act of Creation: The Founding of the United Nations" in 2004, which was the recipient of The Bi-Annual Harry Truman Book Award. In "Act of Creation," Mr. Schlesinger tells a pivotal and little-known story of how Secretary of State Edward Stettinius and the new American President, Harry Truman, picked up the pieces of the faltering campaign initiated by Franklin Roosevelt to create a United Nations. He co-edited The Journals and Letters of His Father, Arthur Schlesinger. In 2016, he penned the introduction to the new edition of President John Kennedy's "Why England Slept." In addition, he has contributed multiple articles to professional journals, magazines and newspapers.

A dedicated community advocate, Mr. Schlesinger was active on the selection committees for British Atlantic Fellowships. He currently serves on advisory boards at Occidental College, the website PassBlue and the International Peace Institute. He is the honorary chairman of the Frank Church Institute at Boise State University. Aligned with several industry-related organizations, Mr. Schlesinger is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, PEN, the Author's Guild, and the UN Correspondents Association. Mr. Schlesinger is also an honorary fellow of the Foreign Policy Association.

Recognized for his work, Mr. Schlesinger has appeared in 12 documentaries on subjects ranging from the United Nations, the U.S. coup in Guatemala, the Cold War code-breaking and President John Kennedy's life. He served on the selections committees on who should receive the Cowan Award from Voice of America for distinguished humanitarian reporting and The Robert F. Kennedy Book Award. Mr. Schlesinger was also a finalist for the National Magazine Award for his article on the 1954 CIA coup in Guatemala. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been cited in over 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Politics and Who's Who in the East.

An alumnus of the prestigious Harvard University where both of his grandfathers, father and uncle had taught, Mr. Schlesinger received a Bachelor of Arts in American history and literature cum laude in 1964, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1968. He was also a teaching fellow in English composition at Harvard in 1968. Mr. Schlesinger holds a certificate for study in European history at Cambridge University in 1965.
