Constantine Efthymiou Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Scientific Education

Dr. Efthymiou retired from St. John's University after more than 40 years of professional experience



Dr. Constantine Efthymiou gained valuable expertise in microbiology education as an associate professor and professor of microbiology for St. John's University.

    OAKLAND GARDENS, NY, March 25, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Constantine Efthymiou has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in agriculture from the University of Athens in 1952, Dr. Efthymiou immigrated to the United States from Greece in 1955 and became a teaching assistant in dairy science with the University of Maryland, where he remained for three years. Following this appointment, he worked for an additional three years as a research assistant in microbiology for the University of Maryland in College Park. During the early stages of his career, Dr. Efthymiou produced an experimental domestic feta cheese from cow's milk.

In the early-1960s, Dr. Efthymiou joined the Carnegie Institute of Technology as an assistant professor, where he found success for more than three years. Before retiring, he gained valuable expertise in microbiology education as an associate professor and professor of microbiology for St. John's University. Throughout his career, he worked on the primary probiotic species of bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus, determining its neotype and other lactic acid bacteria. Although his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Efthymiou is especially proud to have taken his work to the United States, where he could pursue his research at a higher level than he could in Greece.

An expert in his field, Dr. Efthymiou earned a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Maryland in 1958 and 1961. Devoted to his community, he contributes as a volunteer with Hellenic Link Inc, many years as president. He served also as a Member of the Board of Trustees of Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theology at Brookline, MA (2012-2018). In light of his outstanding achievements, he has received a number of patents in the field of manufacturing based on the novel scientific work he did at the University of Maryland as well as for designing and using equipment for microbial cultures under controlled gaseous conditions at St. John's University. Looking toward the future, Dr. Efthymiou intends to continue enjoying his well-deserved retirement.
