Thereafter immigrated to the United States for an internship and residency in general surgery at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. During that period, Dr. Datta served as a research fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and excelled as the chief resident at Maimonides Medical Center. He subsequently undertook a dual fellowship in head and neck oncology and surgical oncology at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. Presently, Dr. Datta is the chair of the department of surgery, the director of the division of surgical oncology and head and neck surgery and the medical director of the Mount Sinai South Nassau Gertrude and Louis Feil Cancer Center, as well as a Professor of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He earned distinction by establishing South Nassau's surgical oncology program in 2001 in Oceanside, New York, and notably specializes in gastrointestinal, colorectal, pancreatic and hepatobiliary cancers, endocrine and soft tissue malignancies and melanoma and head and neck cancers, using minimally invasive approaches. Of Dr. Datta's numerous responsibilities, he is the medical professional who sees patients before surgery, accomplishes the operative work and is present during post-operation recovery.
Dr. Datta is fluent in English, Hindi and Punjabi, allowing him to care for patients of various backgrounds.
