Arthur Warren Molvik, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Molvik has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the field of physics

LIVERMORE, CA, March 31, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Arthur Warren Molvik with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Molvik celebrates many years' experience in his professional network and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Now retired from a position as a physicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL,) Dr. Molvik held his position for 35 exemplary years. Retiring in 2007 he began working as a lab associate in 2008. Earning acclaim for his years of dedication to the field, he holds several patents, and has notably conducted research towards fusion energy on magnetic mirrors, compact torus, and heavy-ion inertial fusion energy, as well as research on a helicon plasma source for plasma processing of silicon semiconductors. Dr. Molvik contributed to both the development and the application of neutral beams for fueling and heating plasma; these enabled groundbreaking progress in single-cell and tandem magnetic mirrors. Subsequently, he studied radio-frequency plasma heating, identified the mechanism for gas desorption that can limit the current in heavy-ion accelerators, and developed and applied plasma diagnostics. For example, he was instrumental in adding radio-frequency heating to a new experiment at the LLNL. In preparation, he worked with a group at the University of Wisconsin on their radio-frequency heating experiment. Dr. Molvik contributed for five months on the project, where he participated in experiments and published papers based on his research. His publications involved collaborations with scientists at universities and other laboratories, including CERN, GSI Darmstadt, and the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk.

Dr. Molvik received a Bachelor of Arts at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN in 1964. He subsequently attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI from which he earned both a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1966 and 1971, respectively. After acquiring his degrees, Dr. Molvik contributed for a year as a research associate in the department of physics on the Wisconsin campus and later served as a visiting scientist in the university's department of nuclear engineering in 1981. Throughout his career, Dr. Molvik has disseminated much of his research findings by contributing scholarly articles to such peer reviewed journals as Physical Review and Physical Review Letters, Review of Scientific Instruments, Physics of Plasmas (Fluids), and Nuclear Fusion.

Active in his community, Dr. Molvik often volunteers his time with the Asbury United Methodist Church in Livermore. There, he has chaired Finance, Stewardship, and Staff-Parish Relations Committees, and managed the endowment fund, as well as leading small groups. Aligned with the American Physical Society, he is an elected fellow of the organization for outstanding contributions to diverse areas of plasma physics and technology, including MHD stability limits in mirrors, and the physics of gas and electron accumulation in the ion accelerators. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Molvik has been cited in the 63rd edition of Who's Who in America and the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
