Dr. W. Darrin Clouse Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery

Dr. Clouse channels a career's worth of knowledge into his teaching positions with the University of Virginia and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences



Looking toward the future, Dr. Clouse aims to make the University of Virginia's division of vascular and endovascular surgery one of the top divisions in the country, both clinically and academically.

    CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, April 01, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. W. Darrin Clouse has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Inspired to enter the field of vascular surgery by former Air Force Surgeon and Mayo Clinic vascular surgeon, Jeb W. Hallett, Jr., Dr. Clouse has found much success in medicine. He is currently a professor of surgery, chief of vascular and endovascular surgery at the University of Virginia. In this capacity, Dr. Clouse treats patients while teaching residents and fellows. He also works with these trainees in academic endeavors, including clinical outcomes research writing and presenting on vascular surgical treatment topics.

Dr. Clouse previously gained experience and expertise in surgery and education during his career in the United States Air Force. He has been chief of vascular and endovascular surgery at the San Antonio Military Medical Center, and David Grant USAF Medical Center where he was co-director of the Northern California Federal Heart, Lung and Vascular Center while on active duty and professor of surgery at the University of California, Davis. In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Clouse is especially proud of serving in the medical corps during tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. After military retirement, Dr. Clouse returned to Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital as associate professor of surgery before taking his current UVA position.

An expert in his field, Dr. Clouse earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from the University of Kansas in 1990. He subsequently obtained a Doctor of Medicine from Mayo Medical School in 1994. Additionally, Dr. Clouse completed surgical residency through UT Health San Antonio and Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in 2000, cardiovascular surgery research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic during residency, and vascular and endovascular surgery fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School in 2003.

With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Clouse has authored and co-authored numerous articles, including "Addition of Proximal Intervention to Carotid Endarterectomy Increases Risk of Stroke and Death", "Contralateral Occlusion and Concomitant Procedures Drive Risk of Non-Ipsilateral Stroke after Carotid Endarterectomy", and "The Durability of Open Surgical Repair of Type I-III Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm." He retains his professional alignment with the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, Southern Association for Vascular Surgery and the American College of Surgeons.
