Now a distinguished professor emeritus at Coastal Carolina University, Dr. Subhash Chandra Saxena was a mathematics faculty member and researcher on campus for nearly 30 years.

Now a distinguished professor emeritus at Coastal Carolina University, Dr. Saxena was a mathematics faculty member and researcher on campus for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2001. A full professor for the last 13 years of his career, he also chaired the department from 1987 to 1993. Instrumental on campus, Dr. Saxena, who was originally hired in 1973 as an assistant professor, was notably the first doctor of mathematics to teach on campus.

Dr. Saxena previously played a major role in the development of the mathematics curriculum. Further, he was responsible for establishing a Pi Mu Epsilon national mathematics honor society chapter on campus. Prior to his tenure at the university, Dr. Saxena held teaching appointments at the University of Akron, North Illinois University, and Atlanta University for a total of eight years.

Dr. Saxena provided his talents as a consultant for the Educational Testing Service. He also served as an advisor and consultant to the Ansal Institute of Technology in New Delhi. He continues to remain active at Coastal Carolina University through the Dr. Subhash C. Saxena Math Contest, which is designed to stimulate interest in mathematics among high school students. The annual event draws students to the campus from throughout South Carolina to compete for awards, prizes, and scholarships.

Dr. Saxena graduated from the University of Delhi in India with a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics in 1952, 1954, and 1958, respectively. He spent one year as an instructor at the Defense Academy of India in Khadakvasla during 1958 and another year as a senior postdoctoral fellow at the Council of Science and Industrial Research in Delhi from 1958 to 1959 before traveling to the U.S. Writing extensively in his field, Dr. Saxena first published "Theory of Real Variables" in 1972. He has since contributed to the Biographical Encyclopedia of Mathematicians and has authored or co-authored numerous articles in various industry-related journals in his area of expertise.

A member of the American Mathematics Society, Dr. Saxena has also been affiliated with the Mathematics Association of America where he served as a section lecturer and the South Carolina state director. In 1985, Dr. Saxena was awarded a Distinguished Teaching Award from Coastal Carolina University and was named Outstanding Teacher within the University of South Carolina system. He was also awarded with a grant from Rotary International for his research. In an effort to leave a legacy behind that stresses the importance of higher education, Dr. Saxena made a financial contribution to Coastal Carolina University's college of science at the conclusion of his teaching career.

In recognition of his gift, the mathematics faculty office suite and teaching space on the second floor of the newly renovated R. Cathcart Smith Science Center changed its name to the Dr. Subhash Saxena Math Suite. The endowed fund supports faculty members and undergraduate students conducting mathematics research. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Saxena has been cited in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
