Dr. Sano is a curator and museum director with more than 50 years of specialty in East Asian art. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies from Indiana University in 1967, having cemented her passion for her studies after studying abroad in Japan during her junior year. Dr. Sano concluded her academic efforts in art history at Columbia University, where she earned a Master of Arts and a Master of Philosophy in Asian art history in 1970 and 1976, respectively, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in the same discipline in 1983.

From 1974 to 1979, Dr. Sano provided her wealth of knowledge in the field as a lecturer in Oriental art at Vassar College. She subsequently contributed to the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, as the curator of Asian art and assistant director of programming between 1979 and 1989. In 1989, Dr. Sano became the deputy director of collections and exhibitions at the Dallas Museum of Art, where she would remain for the next three years. Serving as the deputy director and chief curator of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco from 1993 to 1995, she further flourished as the museum's director from 1995 to 2008. Dr. Sano is most proud of her time with the Asian Art Museum, during which she spearheaded major renovations for the museum upon its relocation to the former home of San Francisco's main library in the heart of the Civic Center.

Following her tenure with the Asian Art Museum, Dr. Sano pivoted to private consulting from 2008 to 2015. Since 2015, she has been active as a senior advisor in the Asian art department of the San Antonio Museum of Art. She has found success with her creative works on East Asian academic art as well, authoring "The Great Age of Japanese Buddhist Sculpture AD 600-1300," in 1982 and editing "Weavers, Merchants and Kings: The Inscribed Rugs of Armenia" in 1984 and "The Blood of Kings: Dynasty and Ritual in Maya Art" in 1986. Moreover, Dr. Sano garnered acclaim for her 2017 exhibition titled "Heaven in Hell: Salvation and Retribution in Pure Land Buddhism." In addition to her primary vocation, Dr. Sano has been engaged with several organizations, including as a member of the visiting committee for the Harvard University Art Museums and a member of the board for the Japanese Art Society of America.

In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Sano has accrued numerous accolades throughout her distinguished career. Honored with a Carnegie grant between 1963 and 1964, she was also the recipient of a Woodrow Wilson fellowship from 1966 to 1967 and a Fulbright-Hays fellowship from 1977 to 1978. In 2008, Dr. Sano was notably bestowed with the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government. Likewise, she has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in America.
