Dr. Suster is renowned as a physician and pathologist with more than 30 years of excellence in the field of thoracic cancer research. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science at the American School of Guayaquil in Ecuador, South America, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from The Catholic University School of Medicine. From 1979 till 1984 he completed a residency in Anatomic Pathology at the Sheba Medical Center of the University of Tel-Aviv School of Medicine in Tel-Aviv, Israel. In 1984 Dr. Suster immigrated to the USA where he pursued further residency training in pathology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center of Greater Miami till 1987, followed by a two-year fellowship in surgical and research pathology at the Yale University School of Medicine.

From 1990 Dr. Suster flourished as the director of surgical pathology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center of Greater Miami and served as a Clinical Professor of Pathology at the University of Miami School of Medicine, until 1997 when he was recruited as Director of Anatomic Pathology and Vice-Chair of Pathology at the Ohio State University. In 2007, Dr. Suster accepted a position as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI, a position he held for 12 years until 2018.

Between 2008 and 2019, Dr. Suster served as the medical director of the Pathology Laboratories for the Medical College of Wisconsin affiliated hospitals, and also created the first centralized Tissue Banking facility for basic and translational research at that institution. During this period, he excelled as a teacher, clinician, scientist and leader in his field. He was granted Chairman Emeritus status by the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2019.

Dr. Suster has served as Editor-in-Chief for the Annals of Diagnostic Pathology for the past 22 years and has published more than 400 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, 40 book chapters, and authored 6 books. He additionally has received grants as a principal investigator for more than $12M in extramural funding for research.

Notably, Dr. Suster's research focuses on cancers of the chest cavity including lung, pleura and mediastinum, as well as tumors of soft tissue, skin and thyroid. He was presented with the 2018 Meritorious Service Award from the College of American Pathologists, the 2018 Joseph C. Eggleston Memorial Lecture Award from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and the 19th Joanne Vandenberge Hill Award for Excellence in Anatomic Pathology from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Suster has additionally been listed in America's Best Doctors, Top Doctors in America, Top Cancer Doctors in America, and ranked in the top 1% of pathologists in America by U.S. News and World Report from 2010-2019.
