Stephen M. Holland, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Stephen M. Holland is a professor emeritus in the department of tourism, recreation and sport management at the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville.

Dr. Holland is a professor emeritus in the department of tourism, recreation and sport management at the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville. A faculty member on campus between 1986 and 2016, he taught various undergraduate and graduate level courses, served as department chairman, served as the graduate programs coordinator for the department and was active on multiple committees, including multiple tourism doctoral committees. He was also an affiliate faculty member at UF's School of Natural Resources and the Environment. Additionally, Dr. Holland taught at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and Texas A&M University, was a research assistant and associate for the Marine Recreation Laboratory at Texas A&M and a park technician for the National Park Service at locations in Texas, Idaho and Washington, D.C.
During his tenure at the University of Florida, Dr. Holland particularly enjoyed being involved with experiential education programs. Leading week-long courses as part of the National Outdoor Recreation and Rural Tourism Consortium, he would take five to 10 students to the Smoky Mountains National Park or Land between the Lakes National Forest as part of the curriculum. He was also involved in study abroad programs, where he traveled with students to Australia and New Zealand. From 2012 to 2013, Dr. Holland notably took a sabbatical to study outdoor recreation and ecotourism small business enterprises, as well as the public and private aspects of Adirondack Park in New York.

A sought-after professional in his field, Dr. Holland spent many years consulting in the profit and non-profit sectors. He was also active on the board of directors of the Alternative Fuels Institute, a liaison for the Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals, a recreational fisheries specialist for the Florida Sea Grant Program and a voting member of the socio-economic scientific and statistical committee of the Gulf of Mexico Fishing Management Council.

Much of Dr. Holland's work has been supported by nearly 50 grants in excess of $1.7 million from such organizations as the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in Tallahassee, the Ocean Conservancy in Houston and the Suwannee River Water Management District in Live Oak, Florida. In more recent years, he extensively studied the recreational uses of parks in various areas of Florida, completed a beach user study at a state park on the Gulf coast, conducted a river user study for the Rainbow River in North Florida and documented various aspects of the charter boat industry in four South Atlantic states. He has notably served as an invited presenter on many occasions, both nationally and abroad, and has participated at conferences and workshops all over the United States.

Dr. Holland contributed chapters to three books, as well as several monographs, manuscripts, many technical reports, and nearly 60 articles in a number of peer reviewed journals based on his years of research. He is most recently a member of the editorial advisory board of the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management since 2018 and a former associate editor of Society & Natural Resources from 1999 to 2002.

A leader in his community, Dr. Holland has served in instrumental roles with various organizations. He is currently active on the board of directors of Paddle Florida since 2018 and is an adviser to the board of Little Orange Creek Nature Center since 2010. He has also served in various Board of Directors roles for Florida Defenders of the Environment across 30 years, including as President and Treasurer.

Following in the footsteps of his uncle, who was a professor of parks and recreation at the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Holland received a Bachelor of Science in psychology at the University of Maryland in 1973 and a Bachelor of Science in conservation and resource management in 1976. Accepted to Texas A&M thereafter, he completed a master's and doctorate degree in 1979 and 1985, respectively. He is a certified parks and recreation professional.

Aligned with over a dozen industry-related organizations in support of his career, Dr. Holland is a member of the National Recreation and Park Association, where he served as an invited expert for the organization's online park resources network. He is also a member of the National Audubon Society, the Florida Recreation and Park Association, the Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals, and, among others, the Putnam Land Conservancy.

Dr. Holland's outstanding career has led to many recognitions. He received a 2015 Certificate of Service from the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council, a 2006 Service Award and 2004 William Penn Mott Jr. Award for Excellence from the National Society for Park Resources and a 2003 Plaque of Appreciation for 17 Years of Leadership from the National Outdoor Recreation and Rural Tourism Consortium. Dr. Holland also received several awards from the University of Florida between 1990 and 2009, including a Research Foundation Research Professorship Award. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been highlighted in the 21st edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest and the third edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
