In addition to his primary professional appointments, Dr. Hug has also offered his expertise in other capacities in the field, having previously served as a visiting research professor at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. He likewise held positions with the American Board of Anesthesiology, the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, and the Association of University Anesthesiologists. An expert in his field, Dr. Hug has lectured on clinical ethics, end-of-life care, opioid pharmacology and addiction, high-risk treatments and therapeutic trials.

While coming of age, Dr. Hug drew considerable inspiration from his father and uncle, who both managed drug stores. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy, with summa cum laude honors, from Duquesne University, and subsequently attended the University of Michigan, from which he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmacology and a Doctor of Medicine cum laude in 1963 and 1967, respectively. Eminently qualified, he is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and a fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hug has been widely recognized for his efforts in pharmacology, education and research. He has received accolades from the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists, the Association of University Anesthesiologists, the Health Care Ethics Consortium of Georgia, Emory Emeritus College, Fellow by election of the Royal Colleges of Anaesthetists in England, Australia and New Zealand, and many other renowned institutions and organizations. In addition, Dr. Hug has been featured in several Marquis Who's Who publications throughout the years, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.

As a dedicated professional, Dr. Hug was most grateful for his late wife of 61 years, Marilyn Ann (France) Hug, who counseled him to treat his associates and fellow researchers with all the empathy due to any human being. A prolific writer, he has authored and edited several of his own professional publications, and contributed over 175 articles to peer-reviewed journals, books and other publications. He maintains his professional affiliation with the American College of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Association of Cardiac Anesthesiologists, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. Outside of his professional circles, Dr. Hug enjoys such diversions as bicycling, walking, racquetball, piano, and reading history and current events.
