Mr. Simmons, who is bilingual in both English and Spanish, recently concluded his tenure as an adjunct professor at the University of Denver's Sturm College of Law in 2015 after more than 10 years in the classroom. During his tenure, he taught Immigration Law in Spanish at the university's Spanish in the Law program. Mr. Simmons also found success as an honorary legal counsel to the Mexican Consulate General in Denver for over a decade, between 1987 and 1999. He serves the Consulate as a Consulting Attorney, a position he has held since 2013.
Describing his work as a calling, Mr. Simmons has always enjoyed serving others throughout the community. In fact, he handles several pro bono cases year-round in order to contribute. One of his most profound cases involved a Honduran journalist that he freed after over six months in a detention center. This case has forever remained at the forefront of Mr. Simmons mind and motivation for him to continue serving the immigrant community.
As a recognized member of his community, Mr. Simmons has been active as an elder of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church since 2019. He further distinguished himself on the board of directors for the Colorado Chapter of the Christian Legal Society and for Integrated Community Services since 2016. Among other organizations, Mr. Simmons is a member and colonel in the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol. He served as National legal Officer from 1998 to 2001, and has been Rocky Mountain Region Legal Officer since 2015.
Born and raised in Denver, Mr. Simmons attended college locally, graduating from the University of Denver with a Bachelor of Arts in 1980 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1985. He has been admitted to practice by the Colorado Bar Association, the U.S. District Court of Colorado and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit. In support of his career, Mr. Simmons has been active as a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, serving as Colorado Chapter Chair in 1996 and 1997. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, the Colorado Bar Association, and the Denver Bar Association. In 2019 he was named a life fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He has also been involved as a member of the University Club of Denver where he serves on the Board of Directors on admissions. Mr. Simmons has been named as a Colorado Super Lawyer every year between 1998 and 2020.
