A celebrated educator of more than 50 years, Dr. Kirk presently teaches courses in physics, materials science and electrical engineering as a research professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. He formerly held appointments at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Texas A&M University in College Station and the University of Texas at Dallas. In 2015, Dr. Kirk also founded 3D Epitaxial Technologies, LLC, a nonprofit research and development company, as its president and owner.

Some of Dr. Kirk's noteworthy roles in the field have included his service as the director of the Nanofabrication Center, at Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station between 1989 and 2002. He was also a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Florida in Gainesville and a technical collaborator at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. Dr. Kirk's areas of specialty have included materials growth, epitaxy, heterostructures, semiconductor processing and photovoltaics. His current research focuses on several topics related to nanoscale science and technology. Earlier topics have included co-integration of CMOS with III-V materials for single-chip, as well as digital-system applications such as high-speed A/D conversion, communications, radar and optoelectronics.

A prolific author, Dr. Kirk has contributed over 120 articles to various refereed journals. He notably edited "Quantum Statistics and the Many-Body Problem" in 1975, followed by "Nanostructure Physics and Fabrication" in 1989 and "Nanostructures and Mesoscopic Systems" in 1992. He released "2D Quantum Metamaterials" in 2020. Dr. Kirk has long served as a member of the editorial board for Superlattices and Microstructures since 1991.

Dr. Kirk received a Bachelor of Arts in physics at Washington University in 1964. Shortly thereafter, he attended Stony Brook University, the State University of New York system, where he acquired both a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1967 and 1970, respectively. A recognized senior life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Dr. Kirk is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, the American Vacuum Society and the Materials Research Society. Additionally, he is active with Sigma Xi, a nonprofit honor society for scientists and engineers.

Dr. Kirk has secured ongoing grants from the National Science Foundation since 1973. He was the recipient of a National Bureau Standards Precision Measurements Award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology in 1987 and a Texas Engineering Experiment Station Research Fellow Award from the Texas Engineering Experimental Station in 1992. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Kirk has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
