Dr. Larry D. Hayden-Wing is a prominent wildlife biologist, research scientist, educator and consultant who celebrates more than 55 years in his field.

Dr. Hayden-Wing is a prominent wildlife biologist, research scientist, educator and consultant who celebrates more than 55 years in his field. He was the owner, director and principal scientist of Hayden-Wing Associates in Laramie, Wyoming, for 26 years, a natural resources wildlife consulting firm that worked with various agencies and private organizations. Additionally, Dr. Hayden-Wing was instrumental in academia, teaching graduate and undergraduate wildlife ecology and conservation courses at the University of Wyoming and Iowa State University and serving in research positions at the University of Iowa and Washington State University.

During his illustrious career, Dr. Hayden-Wing's primary expertise was focused on big game management and ecology. He conducted research and worked on the resolution of big game-human conflicts throughout the western United States and in several other countries, such as Africa and China. A recognized authority on wild ungulates, elk and African elephants, he is also experienced with many other wildlife species and habitats, including forest, range, cropland and aquatic ecosystems.

Levering his expertise, Dr. Hayden-Wing currently serves on a research team to study greater kudo in the Kidepo Region of Northern Karamoja in Uganda, East Africa. He was active on various committees for several industry-related organizations, and the greater sage grouse advisory committee of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department from 2000 to 2003, which was responsible for putting together a plan to manage sage grouse within the state. Additionally, Dr. Hayden-Wing has testified and served as an expert witness of legal proceedings in numerous states throughout the country, has been involved in administering, producing and writing 58 environmental impact statements and environmental assessments on behalf of the National Environmental Policy Act, and has authored and edited nearly 50 technical reports, public presentations and scientific publications, as well as a monograph that explored elephants and forests.

While working in Uganda, East Africa, studying elephants in a high tropical forest for two-and-a-half years, Dr. Hayden-Wing experienced several life-threatening encounters with African elephants and Cape buffalo. To tell about his accounts, he authored a 447-page illustrated book in 2012, entitled "In the Footprints of Elephants: Accounts and Memoirs of a Wildlife Scientist." He later authored a 351-page illustrated book in 2016, entitled "Never to be Repeated: A Ride Through Life," where he documented many other life experiences, from parachuting from airplanes at low elevations to fighting forest fires in Montana and Idaho and facing a mountain lion in a small cave in Arizona.

Dr. Hayden-Wing graduated from and became certified by the Naval Justice School in 1958 while serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1960. He also attended the University of Idaho, where he completed both a Bachelor of Science in forestry and wildlife in 1958 and a Doctor of Philosophy in wildlife ecology in 1969. He holds several certifications as a biologist and is fluent in English and upcountry Swahili.

A professional member of the Wildlife Society, Dr. Hayden-Wing is also active with several honor societies, including Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society. As a member of the Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society, he received a 1968 National Award of Merit. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Hayden-Wing has been featured in the 20th edition of Who's Who in the West and the ninth through 11th editions of Who's Who in the World.
