In her role, she created the Colleges Risk Management team, which is a collaboration across the college of faculty and staff to evaluate and implement safety and risk policies and practices affecting students, faculty, staff and campus visitors. She also created under the umbrella of the Small Business Incubator, a team to create a Student Innovation Hub and Cosmetology Makers Space designed to focus on developing students soft-skills and to nuture innovation and entrepreneurship in their college experience. Eminently qualified in her field, Dr. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts in communications from Howard University and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy from the Arizona State University – she distinguished herself as the first African American and female to earn a doctorate in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Communications. Moreover, she is a member of Delta Sigma Theta, The Links Inc. and Blessed 26. Looking ahead in her career, Dr. Smith aspires to continue her career in higher education, where she can engage with bright students and professional faculty and staff to re-shape college education to face the challenges of the future that will serve traditional and as well as nontraditional students, integrate classroom learning and professional development, engage campuses and the surrounding communities in entrepreneurship and innovation with the goal lessening the dependency on the tuition-only business model.

Dr. Smith's portfolio of responsibilities includes the small business development center and incubator, chair of the community development corporation, informational technology, and marketing. She has written papers for the Southwest Education Council for Journalism & Mass Communication, and "Twitter in a Crisis: How the FAA Used Microblogging during the 737 MAX 8 Crashes and Aftermath" from 2019. She was initially inspired to enter the realm of crisis aid upon seeing first-hand the struggles of families affected by the destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.
