HOUSTON, TX, April 14, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Cumaraswamy Vipulanandan with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Vipulanandan celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing upon a longstanding passion for construction, Dr. Vipulanandan is known for his innovative approach to such topics as making all human made construction and repair materials highly bulk sensing in 3-dimension (3D sensors) for real time monitoring and also the bonding of grouts and soil. Along with several other accomplishments, he notably developed the smart cement designed to detect loads, contamination, cracks, temperature, earthquakes and gas leaks. There are no buried sensors and the entire cement becomes a 3D sensor with less than 0.1% additive making it a very cost effective modification Dr. Vipulanandan's involvement in academia stems from his wish to educate the next generation on community-building, and he is enthusiastic about the use of technology for increased safety in construction.

In 1980, Dr. Vipulanandan earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, where he was honored with a first class honors degree. Impressively earning straight A's in his graduate coursework, he subsequently obtained a Master of Science in civil engineering from Northwestern University in 1981. Dr. Vipulanandan eventually graduated from the aforementioned university with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1984.

Having excelled as the professor of civil engineering at the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering since 1995, Dr. Vipulanandan draws upon more than four decades of experience in his industry. He began his career with the State Engineering Corporation in Sri Lanka in 1978 and the University of Moratuwa in 1980 before working as a teaching assistant at Northwestern University. Demonstrating professional persistence, Dr. Vipulanandan flourished in a number of positions with the University of Houston, Houston Texas including as an assistant professor, associate professor and then professor and was the chairman of the department of civil and environmental engineering from 2001 to 2009. He is the director for the Center for Innovative grouting Materials and Technology (CIGMAT) and the director of the Texas Hurricane Center for Innovative Technology (THC-IT).

In 2005, Dr. Vipulanandan received the Fluor Daniel Faculty Excellence Award from the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston. He was additionally presented with Senior Faculty Research Excellence Award and the Young Faculty Research Excellence Award from the Cullen College of Engineering, the Hawley Award for Best Paper from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1990 and a Research Award for his auger cast-in-place project from the Texas Department of Transportation in 2000. Likewise, Dr. Vipulanandan accepted several other awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers, along with numerous other academic accolades and mentions demonstrative of his unparalleled ability.

Dr. Vipulanandan has several inventions and some methods under pattern including chemo-thermo-piezoresistive smart cement with real-time monitoring, rapid detection and quantification of surface and bulk corrosion and erosion in metals and non-metallic materials with integrated monitoring, methods of tracing fracking fluids in subsurface formations, production of biosurfactants from used vegetable oil and other oils (recycling oily waste), highly sensing smart orthopedic casting material with real-time condition monitoring system (medical field), testing methods for grouts, coatings and lining materials for wastewater systems and full-scale testing of auger cast in placed piles in sand and clay. For the real-time monitoring, two probes with alternative current is used at relatively high frequencies. The two-probe method can be also used for quality control of concrete mixing, curing and long-term performance based on electrical resistivity which is a material property. New rapid treatment method using water soluable polymer has been developed to minimize the swelling in expansive clays. He has also developed methods to treat contaminated soils and using the microbial fuel cell with multi-cathode and multi-anode chambers to treat oily wastewaters and salty wastewaters and produce electricity with valuable byproducts.

He has developed several new theoretical models including the "Vipulanandan Rheological Model" to characterize all types of fluids, "Vipulanandan Failure Model and Vipulanandan p-q Stress-Strain Model" for soils, rocks, cement, grouted soils, cemented soils and concrete, "Vipulanandan p-q Stress-Piezoresistive Strain Model for smart materials and "Vipulanandan Curing Model" for cement hydration. Interested in community outreach, he also conducts volunteer work for hurricane recovery and coastal in inland flooding protection. New two probe real-time monitoring method has been developed to detect the floodwater rise and transmit the signal to a cell phone app. Dr. Vipulanandan is affiliated with the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Concrete Institute and American Society of Testing Materials.
