Having earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus of biology, Dr. Larry Thomas Spencer notably devoted his entire career to academia.

Having earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus of biology, Dr. Spencer notably devoted his entire career to academia. Joining the Plymouth State College faculty in 1967 as an instructor, he continually progressed, becoming a full professor in 1978, where he remained until retirement in 2003. He also chaired the department of natural science between 1992 and 1996 and, during his tenure, had the good fortune of taking a sabbatical every seven years for a full year as a visiting researcher at the University of California Berkeley, the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, in the People's Republic of China in Suzhou, at the Institute for Artic and Alpine Research at the University of Colorado at Boulder and at Lincoln University in Lincoln, New Zealand. While traveling in China, Dr. Spencer notably learned how to speak and understand Mandarin.

Renowned for his expertise, Dr. Spencer's research interests have included numerous areas of the biological sciences. He spent much of his time studying green shore crabs at Odiorne Point, New Hampshire, which is a very common species of crab in New England, and conducted extensive research at a local marine station in Bangor, North Wales. Some of Dr. Spencer's other research interests have included coral reef organisms in Hawaii and aquatic invertebrates in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.

Since his retirement, Dr. Spencer has remained active in his field, and has presented at numerous conferences throughout New Hampshire and Vermont, and hosted several workshops at the North East Natural History Conference. He has also completed over 50 book reviews for the American Library Association's professional journal, Choice, and for Environmental History and Ecology. Dr. Spencer has authored numerous articles in various other scholarly journals, including American Zoologist, and contributed to the 2002 essay, titled "Four Men and an Albatross: The Growth of America Oceanography, 1882-1921."

Leading numerous community initiatives, Dr. Spencer has been active as the chairperson of Holderness Conservation Commission in Holderness, New Hampshire, since 1990. He is also a former board member of homeland missions for the United Church of Christ, is vice chairperson for New Hampshire Rivers Management Advisory Committee and, among other positions, is on the advisory council and board member for the New Hampshire Association of Conservation Commissions. Meanwhile, some of Dr. Spencer's religious activities have included serving as the treasurer for the Plymouth Congregational-UCC and the United Campus Ministry at Plymouth State University.

Achieving several degrees, Dr. Spencer first received a Bachelor of Science in zoology with a minor in geology at Brigham Young University in 1963. He soon after attained a Master of Arts in zoology with a minor in oceanography at Oregon State University in 1965, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in zoology with a minor in geology at Colorado State University in 1968. Dr. Spencer concluded his academic efforts in 1975, having graduated from the University of California Berkeley with a Master of Library Science in information science.

Dr. Spencer's admiration for his field led him to become a member of several industry-related organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Limnology and Oceanography, the Ecological Society of America and the International Society for the History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Biology. He is a member and past president of the New England chapter of the National Association of Geology Teachers and was the co-founder of the division of the history and philosophy of biology of the American Society of Zoologist. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Spencer has been highlighted in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
