Dr. Richmond is a retired aerospace engineer and educator with a career spanning more than four decades of work in defense and in the private sector. From a young age, he found himself fascinated by airplanes and flight, and he has believed that aerospace engineering was always his calling. Earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley in 1952, Dr. Richmond continued his education at the California Institute of Technology, from which he obtained a Master of Science in aeronautical engineering in 1953 and a Doctor of Philosophy in aeronautical engineering in 1957.

From 1952 to 1954, Dr. Richmond began his career as an aerodynamicist for the Lockheed Martin Corporation, which had been operating as the Lockheed Aircraft Company at the time. Later working as a teaching and research assistant at the California Institute of Technology, he subsequently became active with Douglas Aircraft Company as an assistant group leader. From 1959 to 1987, Dr. Richmond was appointed as a director of engineering and advanced development at Ford Aerospace in Newport Beach, California.

Dr. Richmond further performed as an adjunct associate professor at the University of California School of Engineering during the 1987-1988 academic year. He has also served as the director of engineering for Brunswick Defense from 1988 until his retirement in 1994. Dr. Richmond has additionally consulted for clients including Shelby American Automobiles, and found success as a subgroup leader for the NATO Industrial Advisory Group #16 in Brussels, from 1984 to 1986.

Of his many accomplishments, Dr. Richmond considers his doctoral thesis work on measuring the skin friction on cylinders versus flat plates to be the greatest highlight of his career. He attributes his profound success to an enduring interest in technology and a desire to improve, and he defines success as the ability to see an idea through to its successful or valuable conclusion. A former reserve lieutenant with the Orange County Sheriff's Department, he performed missions, training for personnel, and transported sheriff's personnel to meetings. He also administered programming designed to interest youth in aerospace and aviation, he had maintained his involvement as an aircraft instructor for the Young Eagles Program. An accomplished pilot in his own right, having logged more than 3700 hours of flight time across his career, he is an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In the coming years, Dr. Richmond intends to continue flying and maintaining his own aircraft.
