Dr. Blendon is renowned as a healthcare policy educator with more than 50 years of innovation in his field. He pursued an education at Marietta College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Chicago, where he was initially exposed to healthcare policy and obtained a Master of Business Administration in 1966. Dr. Blendon concluded his studies at the John Hopkins University, graduating with a Master of Public Health in 1967 and a Doctor of Science in 1969.
Dr. Blendon began his career as a fellow of the Indiana University Health Medical Center from 1965 to 1966. From 1969 to 1971, he worked as an instructor of medical care and hospital sciences and the assistant to the associate dean of public health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Blendon further flourished as a special assistant for health affairs and policy development to the assistant secretary of health and science affairs from 1971 to 1972.
Dr. Blendon was senior vice-president for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in Princeton, NJ from 1973 to 1987 and in addition was an adjunct lecturer at Princeton University. In 1987, Dr. Blendon left to be chair of the Department of Health Policy Management at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. While there he also directed a Project on Understanding Americans' Health Agenda with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Dr. Blendon has excelled at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health as the appointed Professor of Health Policy and Political Analysis since 1987 and as the senior associate dean of The Division of Policy Translation and Leadership Development since 2010.
Additionally, in 2010 Dr. Blendon co-authored the book "American Public Opinion and Health Care." A member of the National Academy of Medicine and a past president of the Association of Health Services Research, he currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Among other honors, Dr. Blendon is the recipient of the Warren J. Mitofsky Award for Excellence in Public Opinion Research and a Baxter Award for lifetime achievement in the health services-related research fields.
