OCALA, FL, April 20, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Carolyn Davis Spatta with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. As an accomplished listee, Dr. Spatta celebrates many years' experience as an academic administrator and has been noted for her achievement and leadership qualities. After teaching six years at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan while she completed her PhD at the University of Michigan in 1974, Dr. Spatta took a combined administrative position at Oberlin College in Ohio as the corporate Secretary of the College and the Assistant to the President. In 1978 she accepted an exciting offer in Tehran, Iran to be the president of Damavand College, an American backed Iranian girls' college with 1,000 students. The Iranian Revolution cut short Dr. Spatta's tenure and she and her family were forced to return to the United States in late January of 1979. This circumstance, however, led to other interesting positions for Dr. Spatta as: Vice President for Administration at Eastern Michigan University, Director of Institutional Grants and Programs and of the Consultation and Advisory Service at the Association of American Colleges in Washington, DC, and as Vice President of Administration and Business Affairs and Professor of Geography at California State University, Hayward (now East Bay). Following two years back in the classroom from 1992-1994, Dr. Spatta was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Malaysia, where she was an Administrative Consultant to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. After retirement she served on mediation teams in the San Francisco Bay area and was a consultant in planning and conflict resolution.
A respected professional in her field, Dr. Spatta was a member of several accreditation teams for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, she was chair and member of the Steering Committee of the American Council on Education, National Identification of Women Program. She was Director-at-large (1983-1986) and Chair of the Policy Committee of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan. From 1980-1991, Dr. Spatta was Director and President of the Damavand College Foundation. She was a participant and resource person at the Asian Women's Institute from May 1978 through October 1991. She contributed articles and gave speeches and presentations to a number of educational organizations and private groups. After retirement, one of her more delightful experiences was as a member of the board of directors for Ada Mabel, an apparel company.
Dr. Spatta participated in her community as well as in academia. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, CA (1992-1998), a delegate to the Deanery from St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in Carmel, CA. She was a member of the Oberlin Open Space Committee, of the Ann Arbor Citizens for Good Schools, and President of Tenaya Guild of the John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, CA. She is currently a member of the International Order of St. Luke the Physician.
Dr. Spatta earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley in 1964. She was a graduate student and research assistant in Geography at UC, Berkeley 1964-1965. After being awarded a National Defense Foreign Language Fellowship in Persian at the University of Michigan, Dr. Spatta and her two children moved to Ann Arbor. She earned her Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Michigan in 1968 and 1974, respectively. When asked what she was most proud of, she replied, "My children, Bob and Jennifer." She added that she and her husband Ed are happily enjoying their retirement in Ocala.
