LAS VEGAS, NV, April 21, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Kathleen Melanie Mahon, MD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Mahon celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Having accrued more than four decades of expertise in the field of pediatrics, Dr. Mahon garnered a laudable reputation as a pediatric ophthalmologist prior to her retirement in 2010. She graduated cum laude in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from the University of New Mexico, and was admitted to the University of New Mexico's medical program on the strength of her pharmaceutical coursework. Dr. Mahon earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1975. Eminently qualified, she is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Ophthalmology, and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review.

From 1975 until 1979, Dr. Mahon completed an internship and residency in ophthalmology at the University of Southern California and the University of Florida. She undertook a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at the University of Texas Medical Branch between 1979 and 1980, when she established her own medical endeavor in Las Vegas. Dr. Mahon remained in private practice until 2010.

Dr. Mahon is a former clinical professor of surgery and pediatrics at the University of Nevada. She has contributed extensively to professional journals and has served on the editorial board of Infant Vision, a medical journal. Since 1989, Dr. Mahon has contributed as a member of the board of directors of Ronald McDonald Children's Charities, and was the original founder of the Ronald McDonald House of Greater Las Vegas. Moreover, she is the founder of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Pediatric Ophthalmology Section, and is proud to have been instrumental in changing Nevada insurance coverage provisions for neonatal ophthalmic services. To remain aware of developments in the field, Dr. Mahon has been a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics, where she has held a variety of leadership roles.

When asked about her mentors, she said, "William P.J. Mahon, was the first of my important mentors. He thought I was a diamond in the rough when he met me, when I was a seventeen year old college freshman. He changed my major from Dental Hygiene to Pharmacy, because I taught his room-mate enough calculus to get him through Pharmaceutical Chemistry, on his third try, so he could graduate. Then my husband thought I would be a good doctor, as I was bored as a hospital or retail pharmacist, so he turned in my medical school application. I also had two outstanding ophthalmology mentors, Herbert E.Kaufman MD, who accepted me as a first year medical student into my eventual residency and helped teach me for many years. I was also mentored by Bruce Spivey MD, who taught me that if surgeons didn't "hang together, we would all hang alone," and led me to becoming active with the American College of Surgeons.
