Dr. Carlyle Thayer is renowned as a professor emeritus of politics

    ARANDA, ACT, AUSTRALIA, April 28, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Carlyle Thayer, PhD, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Thayer is renowned as a professor emeritus of politics and one of the world's leading authorities on Vietnam and the South China Sea. He was educated at Brown University, graduating in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts. He subsequently obtained a Master of Arts at Yale University in 1971. Dr. Thayer later earned a Doctor of Philosophy at the Australian National University in 1977.

Dr. Thayer credits his interest in Southeast Asia to his instructors at Brown University, who encouraged and allowed him to delve deeply into the sociopolitical history of the nation, a special interest of his as a student during the height of the Vietnam War. He served in Vietnam with the International Voluntary Services from 1967-68. From 1971 to 1974, was a PhD research scholar at the Australian National University, Canberra. He began his academic career as tutor at the Australian National University in 1973. Dr. Thayer was appointed lecturer at Bendigo College of Advanced Education from 1975-78.

Dr. Thayer's career flourished when he was appointed a member of staff at The University of New South Wales. He taught first in the Faculty of Military Studies at The Royal Military College-Duntroon, Canberra, as a lecturer from 1979 to 1983 and a senior lecturer from 1983 to 1985. He transferred to University College at the Australian Defense Force Academy where he was active as a senior lecturer from 1986 to 1989. He was promoted to associate professor in 1990 and the head of the School of Politics from 1995 to 1997. He was promoted to professor from 1998 to 2010. During this time, Dr. Thayer was seconded to the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies at the Australian Defence College, 2002-04 and the Australian Command and Staff College (2006-07 and 2009).

Dr. Thayer was given leave in the national interest to take up the post of professor and the deputy chair of the department of regional studies at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, U.S. Pacific Command, in Honolulu from 1999 to 2001. Honored as a C.V. Starr distinguished visiting professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in 2005, he was also appointed the inaugural Frances M. and Stephen H. Fuller distinguished visiting professor at Ohio University in 2008. Dr. Thayer remained active as an adjunct global faculty member at the Ohio University Center for Southeast Asian Studies until 2015. He was granted professor emeritus status by the University of New South Wales in 2011.

Dr. Thayer has also found success as Director of Thayer Consutancy, a small business registered in Australia in 2002 that provides political analysis of current regional security issues and other research support to selected clients.

He is the author of numerous articles for professional journals and several books on the politics of Vietnam and Southeast Asia, including "War By Other Means" in 1989, and "Crisis of Expectations: UN Peacekeeping in the 1990s" in 1995. Dr. Thayer was a founding member of the Vietnam Studies Association of Australia and served as national secretary/treasurer from 1994-98. He also served as national secretary of the Asian Studies Association of
Australia from 1996-98.
