As an undergraduate, he attended Oklahoma Panhandle State University. He then transferred to Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where he attended pharmacy school, with a double major including secondary education. While in pharmacy school, he became a teaching assistant to the assistant dean, who later convinced him to apply for medical school. Dr. Heckrodt went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and upon graduation was immediately hired by the university as the youngest instructor in the university's history. He then became a partner with his former roommate in a retail pharmacy in Big Spring, TX, before returning to Oklahoma to obtain a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Oklahoma.
He later had an honorific Doctor of Pharmacy degree bestowed upon him by the State of Oklahoma. Dr. Heckrodt is also a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He holds further certification as an open water scuba diver and a commercial pilot. He is a Federal Aviation Administration trained Senior Aviation Medical Examiner and forensic site investigator. Today, he serves as the medical director of Aesthetic Medical Educators Training, a national educational concern.
Dr. Heckrodt is also serving as a national lecturer on facial aesthetic medicine, and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine for Sam Houston State University School of Medicine. He was in solo practice in a small town for a decade before joining a small group practice for another decade, then a larger multi-specialty group practice for another decade. During these 3 decades he also acted as a plant consultant physician for British Petroleum, Aluminum Company of America, Formosa Plastics Corporation, Carbon Graphite Corporation, Union Carbide Corporation, Standard Oil of Ohio, and Vistron Corporation. While in these positions, he was a member of the American College of Occupational Medicine. He has held positions as head of the emergency department, as well as Vice Chief of Staff for Victoria Regional Hospital and chairman of the Department of Family Practice of the DeTar Health System in Victoria, TX.
Dr. Heckrodt maintains professional affiliation with the Inter-County Clinical Society, the Tri-County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association. He has served as President of the South Texas Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and Inter County Medical Society. In his spare time, he enjoys shooting, hunting, flying, skiing, reading, scuba diving and golf. He has served as an instructor for the NRA for rifle, pistol, and shotgun training and is an associated instructor for Defense Technologies International, Inc.
