Concluding his tenure at the aforementioned university as a professor in 2000, he accepted a role as a microbiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Dr. Thompson subsequently excelled with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the chief of Viral and Rickettsial Zoonoses Branch from 2002 until his retirement in 2006.
An expert in the culturing of micro-organisms, Dr. Thompson has also extensively studied microbial physiology in medically important bacteria as well as the genetic transformation of obligate intracellular bacteria. Microbial physiology is a field of study that seeks to better understand cell structure, growth factors, metabolism and genetic composition of microorganisms. As a result of his years of exemplary research, Dr. Thomson has contributed to numerous articles published in scholarly journals.
Among his civic leadership roles within his community, Dr. Thompson has served as the president, the treasurer and the newsletter editor for Trout Unlimited in Morgantown, a national conservation organization whose mission is to protect and restore the state's trout populations and their watersheds.
Dr. Thomson initially pursued an education at Drake University, earning an undergraduate degree in 1964 and a master's degree in 1966. He later obtained a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Kansas in 1972. Likewise, Dr. Thompson is a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society and was a corresponding member of the American Biological Safety Association, the American Society of Rickettsiology, and the Society of General Microbiology.
Recognized an Outstanding Teacher by West Virginia University in 1980, Dr. Thompson received a MacLachlan Award from West Virginia University School Medicine in 1994 and 1995. Additionally, he has secured several grants from the National Science Foundation between 1980 and 1986 and the National Institutes of Health between 1997 and 1999. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Thompson has been showcased in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
