Emma Luster Shepard retired from a tenured career in education that spanned more than three decades.

Having garnered a laudable reputation for inimitable expertise in her field, Ms. Shepard retired from a tenured career in education that spanned more than three decades. Working with the Caddo Parish School Board in 1986 as a kindergarten teacher, she later transitioned toward the role of a reading recovery teacher and master teacher before ultimately serving as a reading content coach between 2004 and 2012. An expert in literacy, Ms. Shepard earned renown for her enthusiasm in the classroom, as well as for her perseverance in ensuring that all of her students succeed. Prior to teaching, she worked for the Ark-Tex Council of Government in Texarkana, Texas, as an intake officer and secretary from 1980 until 1983.

An avid community advocate, Ms. Shepard she was prolifically active within the community. A volunteer advocate on behalf of the AARP for several years, she also provided her services as a counselor for the Young Women's Christian Association's (YWCA) Family Violence Center in Shreveport. Additionally, she excelled as an advisory board member for the Shreveport Women's Commission and volunteered as a disciples' director for the Peaceful Rest Missionary Baptist Church. In the political and social sphere, Ms. Shepard has maintained her affiliation with the Shreveport Democratic Women since 1998 and the YWCA Racial and Social Justice Committee since 2012.

Prior to embarking upon her professional journey, Ms. Shepard pursued a formal education at Louisiana State University (LSU), from which she attained a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in 1985 and 1993, respectively. After working for several years, she returned to LSU, where she earned an education specialist certification in 2003. Ms. Shepard holds multiple other certifications as well, including in reading recovery and supervision of student teachers.

To remain aware of developments affecting her field, Ms. Shepard maintained involvement with such organizations as the Louisiana Association of Educators, the National Education Association, of which she is a former board director, and the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association, where she is a past president. Ms. Shepard was first recognized for her achievements as an educator when she was named as the Elementary Teacher of the Year by Caddo Association of Educators in 1995. She has since been bestowed with a PDK Joseph Garner Award in 2003, a PDK Distinguished Service Award in 2010, a Top Ladies of Distinction Education Award in 2014, a Louisiana Retired Teachers Outstanding Leadership Award in 2016 and a Senator John Milkovich Principled Leadership in Education Award in 2017.
