Initially obtaining a Master of Science in chemistry from Ulm University, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry at the University of Bayreuth in 1997. From 1998 to 2000, Dr. Schmidt worked as a sales representative for the respiratory division of Boehringer Ingelheim. He was additionally active as the European marketing director for Merck from 2006 to 2008, transitioning to the international franchise lead for diabetes from 2008 to 2009 and the company's global brand leader for diabetes products from 2010 to 2012. Dr. Schmidt was appointed as the head of the Western European Cardiovascular Metabolic Diabetes Unit through 2012.
Dr. Schmidt later joined Roche Pharmaceuticals as the general manager of the Finland market in 2012 and the Austrian general manager from 2014 to 2017. In 2017, he found success as the vice president and the global head of biologics strategy with Roche Pharmaceuticals. Since 2018, Dr. Schmidt has excelled as the general manager and chairman at Biogen, an international biochemistry company specializing in neuroscience.
Within five years, Dr. Schmidt hopes to obtain a more organizationally-impactful membership in his field, potentially through his participation on an executive committee. He attributes his success to his interest in people, leadership skills, and high-energy personality, as well as his results-focused attitude.
