Originally hired at the aforementioned university as an assistant professor of chemistry in 1974, he was subsequently promoted to an associate professor in 1978 and then to a professor of chemistry in 1983. Serving as an assistant chairman for the department of chemistry & chemical biology from 1976 to 1982 and the acting chairman from 1987 to 1988, he notably earned distinction as a distinguished professor of chemistry in 2005 until his retirement in 2014.
Dr. Paine additionally leveraged his expertise through a series of lectureships at various academic institutions of note. In 1997, he served as a Bayer lecturer at the University of New Hampshire as well as an E.L. King summer lecturer at the University of Colorado. Likewise, Dr. Paine was recognized as an E. Wiberg lecturer at the University of Munich in Germany in 1998. He was also selected to deliver the 40th University of New Mexico Research Lecture in 1995.
A prominent figure in his field, Dr. Paine received numerous grants in support of his research, which included the topics of ligand design for selective metal ion recognition and separation, molecular and polymeric precursors for ceramic nitride materials and applications, and molecular approaches to main group element rings and cages. As result of his studies, he holds 9 patents in his field, and he has authored more than 250 scientific articles in various peer-reviewed journals as well as several book chapters. Dr. Paine has served on the editorial boards for several scholarly journals, including Inorganic Chemistry, Organometallics and Main Group Chemistry and participated on numerous advisory panels for the U.S. National Science Foundation, Department of Energy and National Research Council.
Initially pursing his undergraduate studies at the University of California Berkeley, Dr. Paine obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, with honors, in 1966. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Michigan, where he acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry in 1970. Dr. Paine spent the next two years as a postdoctoral research associate in chemistry at Northwestern University in Illinois, followed by another two years in the same capacity at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) until 1974. He then served as a visiting staff member at LANL from 1974 to 1995.
Dr. Paine's early affinity for the sciences ultimately led to his collegiate studies in chemistry as he prepared for his professional path. Crediting several mentors along the way, he especially pays homage to his doctoral advisor, Robert W. Parry. Dr. Paine has been an active member of the American Chemical Society, for which he participated on numerous committees and advisory panels, and has been affiliated with Phi Lambda Upsilon and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Paine has been presented with several honors throughout his eminent career. He received the Boron in the Americas Award in 2006, and was recognized as an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1982. He also held a NASA traineeship between 1966 and 1968, while a doctoral student at University of Michigan.
