A premier criminal defense attorney in the state of New York, Mr. Stavis excels as a partner with Mintz & Gold LLP, with which he specializes in white collar criminal defense. Due to his vast breadth of knowledge, he also lectures at several institutions, including Iona College and the JFK Special Warfare Center. He is also active as a faculty member for the Cardozo Law School Intensive Trial Advocacy Program. Before establishing his practice with Mintz & Gold, Mr. Stavis gained valuable expertise as a senior partner with Galley Dreyer & Berkey LLP, and a partner with both Stavis & Kornfeld and Kartagener & Stavis. A respected and experienced attorney, he has tried more than 100 cases in state and federal courts, many of which were high-profile and had numerous defendants. Additionally, Mr. Stavis has argued more than 100 appeals in courts across the country.

During the early years of his career, Mr. Stavis also worked as the assistant district attorney in Bronx County. Throughout his 30-plus years in law, he cites his involvement in the "Preppy Murder" case, which was profiled in a documentary and generated an article in the New York Law Journal, as the highlight of his career. Mr. Stavis remains aware of changes in the field through his professional alignment with the New York Council of Defense Lawyers, the New York State Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

In pursuit of his legal career, Mr. Stavis earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Queens College in 1979. Subsequently, he obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence, with honors, at the George Washington University School of Law in 1982, before being admitted to practice law through the New York State Bar Association and the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. In the ensuing years, Mr. Stavis has represented cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third and Fourth Circuits, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, and the U.S. District Courts for the District of Connecticut and the Northern District of New York.

Devoted to the legal industry, Mr. Stavis flourished as the chair of the federal courts committee and the subcommittee on criminal justice for the New York City Bar Association, het vice president and counsel for the Larchmont Historical Society and a mediator with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, he has authored a number of publications, including "Religion and Justice" and "The New Man at the Justice Department," which were featured in The New York Times, and "Federal Plea Agreements Leave Open Risk of Prosecution in Other Districts" and "Computer Searches: A 'General' Warrant Can No Longer Satisfy Requirements," which were both featured in the New York Law Journal. For his outstanding excellence in the field, he accepted a trustee scholarship in law school and a Professional Achievement Award from George Washington Law's Alumni Association. Consistently AV-rated through Martindale-Hubbell, he was also honored as a New York Super Lawyer every year between 2007 and 2016.
